The UK also has a lot of immigrants- I don't know if they report similar
problems or not. I'd reckon a bigger danger here is bad native drivers.
I was in a taxi for two tedious hours today, and noticed lots of people
passing us on the motorway using their phone, which is now quite
serious- automatic points on the license. I saw one van driver not only
holding the phone but smoking at the same time. I felt quite unsafe...

Yes, a bit silly. I'm interested to know to what extent this kind of
thing does affect road accidents. That said, in the abstract it does
sort of make sense that all countries drive on the same side, and have
the steering wheel on the same side- but that's not reality.

Well, I went roaring past Dublin Castle on the wrong side of the road
early on my third day in Ireland. Luckily it was Sunday and the lone
pedestrian waved me down. The worst of it was that I had sucessfully
gotten from the airport to my hotel near Trinity College in Friday PM
rush hour. I was very proud since it was my first time driving on the left

Considering their appalling road safety laws and statistics
now, and the quality of the roads, it's possible no-one
would notice the difference.
You can still drive all your life over there without
graduating from "L".

The answer is obvious. All those countries driving on the
right should switch to the left:-)
No need to convert the cars in the short term.
Take a trip to Charlotte Amalie in the USVI; they drive on
the left and get all their vehicles from the USA. Sitting in
the front passenger seat of a cab can be a real adrenalin
rush.

Ireland isn't terrible- plenty of European countries with worse stats.
I'm surprised to see that NL is among the best in terms of statistics,
given what Martin says! (UK is pretty good too.)

This is when you make the wrong side of the road mistake,
when there is no traffic. I have done the same thing on an
empty road when first setting out, no problems if there is
already some traffic, just join in with them.

Well, sort of. The mistake is only made when you start. Once on the correct
side one stays on the correct side. So the problem is starting when no
traffic, or pulling out of a parking lot, where there often is no traffic
until you get to the road.

Well, it is the right side!
Actually, I learned to drive in the US, but still..

I must admit I was comparing them to home, not Europe. Next
to Naples it was the most "interesting" driving experience
of my travels.

I found that my most dangerous moments for confusion
occurred when turning left at a crossroads. It was much too
easy to smoothly turn and continue on the left side of the
road...quickly corrected and never hit anything:-)

My biggest embarrassment was returning a car to La Guardia airport,
went into Central Park on the one way road in the wrong direction.
Lots of hollering from joggers until we could safely make a U-turn. >> Stay informed about: Back to Ireland again |
