I can't say much about Banff - our first place was in the town center across
from a bar, and we got no sleep at all before 3am for our two nights there.
On our return, we stayed in a motel a bit farther north on the main drag,
and it was still quite noisy, with traffic noise this time. When we were
looking, I did see a lot of b&b places in the Banff area that weren't
downtown, and given the opportunity I'd choose one of them the next time.
We did stay at the Pine Bungalows in Banff for several nights and we loved
the place. Our unit was quite new six years ago; a one-bedroom with good
kitchen facilities, though all we used were the refrig and the toaster.
It had a wide porch overlooking the Athabasca River, and the front yard was
a gathering place for elk at dusk, even with barbecue grills going at
several units. The staff were friendly and everything was well tended. Not
the place if you want room service, but hard to beat if you want a cabin in
the woods for a few days.

ps: Just looked at Trip Advisor, and I think the same sour-grapes crowd has
the same things to say about every place on earth. Bad room service? No
kidding. No room service. Musty carpets? No carpets either. Hole in the
screen door? Close the inner door, or get a piece of duct tape and
jerry-rig it. You couldn't figure that out in six days? Don't want to wash
the dishes? Don't use them. 95% of the comments were in line with mine
above, and even more favorable.
