Hi all!
The family and I will be heading to Maine this summer. One of the things
we enjoy is viewing wildlife, so part of the itinerary includes Baxter
State Park (for two days). Well, now that I have reservations in a
local Millinocket hotel, and have begun investigating the options more
thoroughly, I am wondering if Baxter is really a place to go for people
who aren't into mountain climbing or huge backwoods backpacking trips
(well, hubby and son might like that, but wife and son's girlfriend....
not so much).
*I* just want some nice hikes near streams,/ponds/lakes... maybe a
couple.few hours in length in hopes of seeing some beautiful scenery and
wildlife (particularly moose). However, the websites I see talk about
the "popular" trailheads being filled by 6 a.m. for the day, and a whole
bunch of stuff about mountain and rock climbing.
So, is Baxter a place where one can take a few nice hikes in a day, or
is it all reallyreally difficult? I can't even find any maps that
really show where these hikes are, how far from wherever you can park
your car, etc.
I did find some campground maps, with some of the ponds/streams drawn
in, however it doesn't say if you can park there, etc.
So... any suggestions?
Thanks much!
Shelly
