Can someone share their experiences in Belize? I have a friend who
says this is a place in the Carribbean where someone of modest income
can live comfortably.

You might get a copy of the book I wrote on the subject, Adapter Kit: Belize.
It's the only comprehensive, up-to-date guide to living, retiring and buying
property in Belize. Your library might have it or if not it's available from
Amazon.com and larger bookstores (or any bookstore can order it.)

Living in Belize can be cheap, or expensive, depending on where in Belize and
your lifestyle.

The Belize government encourages retirees age 45 and over and has a program
called the Qualified Retired Persons Incentive Program where you can quickly
get residency and import a car, boat and airplane (if you have one) and your
household goods tax-free.

Bill,
Belize is a wonderful place to visit. The people a friendly and very low
keyed. Their respect for the environment and wild life preservation is very
obvious to anyone. If your an "outdoor" kind of person, with respect for
cultural and ethnic diversity, you'll feel right at home. I'm always
surprised how little I spend compared to places like the USVI, and the
diving is so much better.
If you don't mind going a bit more south, the coastal town of Bocas del Toro
or the mountain areas (Boquete) in Panama would be a great place to live.
