My wife and I are planning a vacation in Brazil over the New Year. We
have to change planes in Panama City airport on the way into the
country, but our changeover time is only an hour and we will not be
leaving the airport. Does anyone know whether this means that we will
have to get the yellow fever vaccination in order to enter Brazil?
Panama is on the list of infectious countries for yellow fever.

(We're not planning to visit any yellow-fever infected areas within Brazil).

Thanks,

D

The following countries are listed on the page that the Brazilian
embassy links to: Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon,
Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Gabon, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea,
Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Democratic Republic of
Congo (ex-Zaire) or Venezuela. http://www.braziltourism.org/visas.html

Thanks for the link! Now I'm even more confused, because the
Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco has a different list on its
webpage:

http://www.brazilsf.org/visa_tourist_eng.htm

which in turn references the following WHO document:

http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2007/9789241580397_11_eng.pdf

which includes a much larger number of countries, including Panama.
Has anyone actually flown to Brazil via Panama -- and if so did
immigration authorities demand a yellow fever vaccination?

Thanks!

David

Welcome to Central/South America where they don't even know their own
rules.
I have crossed 15 borders down here (incl Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil
(from Paraguay), Panama, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina) by car and by
plane and I have never been asked to show the international
certificate of vaccination a single time.

Best wishes, Marcus

We were "advised" on getting vaccinations and the "little yellow booklet"
by our local tropical diseases doctors (I wasn't going to argue with them)
, saying that we would be "required to show the vaccination cert booklet" when we
entered some countries.

When we actually got there this did not happen, once, and we did pass a few borders.

Its a weigh-up situation-how is the disease transmitted? Is it nasty? How much does the vaccination
cost? Yellow fever is trasnmitted by infected mozzies. You'll be putting your trust in the insect control
of the Panama airport Smile
