Hello people
I was visiting the US and Canada several times by car and also by RV.
My future plannings include a longer trip to the north for about 10 weeks.
As rentals are quite expensive, I was thinking about buying an RV. And
this takes my Google searches to no end. Could you perhaps feed me with
some informations. Everything (nearly) that helps, Books, Websites and
other stuff is appreciated.
Questions:
1. Are there reference prices for used RVs.
Like x years old x miles driven equal xx% off new price?
2. Where to buy cheaper? US or Canada?
3. What fees or other surplusses to expect?
I do now about G.S.T. and sales taxes at different
locations. But, I am sure there will be more fees.
4. There will be surely annual fees/taxes to pay.
Insurance and other stuff?
5. Are there nice and well arranged web sites were
one can compare more than just a few RVs?
6. Would you buy from a rental agency? They sell their
old (4-5 years) gear usually at the end of season.
If had once an offer from http://canadream.com/
7. Any other hurdles for international buyers to
watch for?
I am thinking about a 24" MH. I didn't really understand the "classes"
(Class "C") I found on different websites.
Found some nice RVs like the Winnebago View 24B, but I cannot afford a new
one.

If you live in Europe, you can buy an RV (or a car) in the U.S. but
you won't be able to get license plates or insurance for it, as those
things require that your legal residence be in the U.S.
I don't know what Canada's laws are, but I suspect that they are
similar. >> Stay informed about: Buying a RV in US or Canada |

Ok, thanks... strange I know people owning cars (not RVs) in the US,
but living in Switzerland... Perhaps they got an intermediary?

All 50 states?
This is not Federal law, it is state law.
I am sure that some states will be satisfied with a mailing address.
As far as insurance, it is up to the insurance company. Some may care about
your legal residence. But some may not.

You need to be asking this on forums in Australia, Germany or England.
I see people from these countries in North America Campgrounds all the
time that own their own rig. I never go into personal conversations
about how they do it, so I don't have a clue?? The only US
orginization that I know that may be able to give you some insite is
Escapees.

I would check on that if I were you. I'm not so sure it's true, Try
contacting Cuise America or El Monte and ask them >> Stay informed about: Buying a RV in US or Canada |

Says who? There is no federal license or insurance. It is state by
state. >> Stay informed about: Buying a RV in US or Canada |

I'm not sure how authoritative this is, but the site USATourist.com
says:
"You cannot obtain a valid registration tag until you prove that you
have adequate liability insurance coverage. It may be difficult to
obtain insurance coverage unless you have an address within the USA
and a valid state driver's license. Even with a local address, you may
be required to pay high insurance prices because the insurer will not
be able to check your past driving history records."

There are = 50 = states, each with their own registration laws.
Check out http://www.dmv.org/ which has a summary for each
state. I don't think that residency is the problem, rather, getting
an insurace company to give you an insurance policy is the issue. >> Stay informed about: Buying a RV in US or Canada |

Really? I have never seen cars or RV's with European plates in the
US.
