Post subject: Buying a backpack
Archived from groups: rec>travel>budget>backpack (more info?)

Hey all,

Here's a question: I am planning to buy a new backpack within the coming
days, and I'm left with 2 possibilities: the Karrimor Global 70/90 and the
North Face Galileo 75. As far as price goes, they're about equal around 200
euros (with the latter being about 20 euros more expensive). Is there anyone
with experiences with either of the two, be it the actual product or the
company (ie. the brand), and anyone that can tell me which of the two
choices is a better one?

The Karrimor has the nice feature of being expandable (a zipper expands the
pack from 70 to 90 liters), and it's straps are better ventilated and nicely
cushioned.
The North Face is slicker (Karrimor has a bit of a bump due to the
day-pack).

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated; I'm having a very hard
time deciding, and the salesperson also told me that there really isn't a
wrong choice in this case... still, you never know if there's anyone out
there with pertinent advice on this.

Thanks in advance,
Will

Hi Will,

I have the Karrimor Global 70/90 and found it absolutely excellent for my
recent 4 month trip to Brazil, the compression system is fantastic, the full
length zip makes it easy to pack and the lugage cover was good for trips on
buses and planes preventing the back system from getting damaged, the
daypack was also good, one small complaint was the lack of a proper back
system on the daypack, it could get quite uncomfortable if carrying it for
long periods. One word of warning when full this pack is VERY heavy, so its
prolly best to try to not use the expansion pocket unless you really have
to!

Hope That Helps

Rob...

I have the Galileo and like it very much.

I liked the fact that the North Face's day pack zippers on and off the
outside. I personnally easily pack light enough to just keep the day
pack packed inside the main pack. And so with the daypack off the main
pack, the main pack looks 'normal'. I cannot speak for the Karrimor,
but an Eagle Creek of the same daypack-on-the-outside philosphy used a
'kangaroo pouch' approach that did not sit well with me.

Try to wear both of them with simulation weights in them. Get full
instructions on putting the pack on an adjusting all the straps. Make
sure the belt strap can be as freaking tight as you can make it, and be
comfortable for you.

One of the two metal clasps for the should strap broke. It's made of a
cheap metal. I replaced it with a cheap aluminum clasp. This is OK
with me because I only put the straps away and carry it in this
'suitcase' mode when boarding an airplane and want to keep a low
profile with it since it is technically too tall for the airline sizing
restrictions. Now, it sure FITS well anyway, but that's besides the
point.

I love the daypack. Lots of gadgets. And the clasps for hooking it
into the main pack have a 'hide away' slit so even it looks 'normal'
apart from the main pack.

Both day and main pack have zippers designed for locking together.

I've worn my whole pack with tons of souvenier weight and had no
problems doing archeological tourism over Minoan ruins while on transit
without a room to store it in. It fit well. Also note that the
Galileo has difference sizes. I had to get a Large for the length of
my back.

Hi Rob

Thanks for the advice... A couple of questions: the fact that the pack
expands to 90 seems nice and all... is it a practical feature? That is to
say, if I were to ever need to expand it to that size, won't the weight just
be way too much? When not expanded, the feature is still no bother though,
right?

The other question. The pack looks more bulky than the other option, a
little fatter, and especially the day pack bulges out. Do its dimensions
permit traveling around a lot (that is, moving from bus to train to hostel
etc)?

Thank you,
Will

well, for my trip I needed to have it expanded on my way out and then found
I had too much clothing with me so I simply left some stuff behind so came
back with it not expanded!!!, it is heavy when its expanded and full but its
managable, the back system is very good and comfortable. The way the
expansion chamber works it doesnt take up any room when not expanded so no
bother there. also the system is clever in that the daypack can also be
clipped on in fron, on the straps of the main rucksack, this was a very
handy feature, keping valuables safe and easily accessable. The bottom line
is that it is a big pack, but its nice to have that extra capacity if you
need it (I had to take boots, a sleeping bag and a laptop with me, and still
managed to get loads in)

Regards

Rob...
