at Calcutta airport , flights in from Bangkok , I believe passengers
are scammed on mercilessly by the airport authoritiies , in concert
with professional baggage thieves.
The scam runs like this: Targets arriving from Bangkok are pulled
aside by so-called agricultural inspectors who suggest that if they
were to search the passengers baggage they would surely find
food stuffs from Thailand which they announce are illegal to bring
into India. They do this in a very round-about slowly building
suggestive way that allows cohorts to identify the baggage of those
being questioned somehow , and while the passengers are being
detained on these stupid premises the thieves either manhandle
the bags open in the baggage claim area , or make off with the smaller
pieces outright. The official in the meantime finally gets around to
telling you that in exchange for a certain amount of 'foreign
currency' he can ignore the matter and not have to look into your bags
afterall. Usually you give it up , just so you can get on your way.
Only to find that some of your bags have been hiested.
It's a double scam and even though Air India and assumably
Kolata airport authorities have ben alerted , it continues.
Better to fly into Delhi from Bangkok....
