OK it's neither Aussie nor NZ, but nearby ....

Off to New Caledonia in a few weeks for just four nights, and
wondering what the options are.

Can you for instance hire a phone for such a short period.

NZ Telecom don't roam there. Knew that. But was surprised to learn
from a Voda counter jockey that they didn't either.

Standing by .....N.

I was just snooping around and discovered that they don't show up on the
prepaidgsm website either. The trouble may stem from their being an
overseas department of France. You might check Orange and see if they serve
the area. (though Voda works france as well. very puzzling, could this be
like E Timor (or at least as it was ten years ago) one of the last bastions
of no cellness?

http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/roa_ncmo.shtml
says Vodafone roaming works. I'd believe that site before I'd believe a
counter jockey.

Thanks Jonathan. Current status is I've been offered the use of a
Vodafone(NZ) cellphone, and I'm hoping I can just purchase a local
simcard upon my arrival in New Caledonia. Will that work ? And if so,
does it become immediately active once the NC-purchased sim card is
inserted? This is important, since I'm only in the country for 4
nights.

Cheers!!

Hey! Thanks for that link. "Counter jockey mistaken" wouldn't be a
first.

Cheers Jason .........N

better to find a totally unlocked phone. Vodaphone may well have a
different lock on phones in Oz than NC. Phone companies do not want to
makethis easy. I have seen this in the European and US Markets. They like
to sell phones. Unlocked you can use your gsm phone that you have right now
and put the NC sim in it presto phone service.

4 nights in New Caledonia isn't nearly enough time to visit this
beautiful spot so close to NZ & Australia....Great spot to visit.
Try contacting Tourism New Caledonia in Auckland as they are very
helpful & will know.A phone call to them will help resolve your
query.
I'M sure they will even send you some great brochures to peruse before
you go.
A great little website to also check out is" Tijabou" as they have
lots of good links.
Have an awesome time, and check out the museums when your up there.
Another thing you may like to find out before you go there is if they
are having a 'BANK' holiday as they have these around once a month on
a Monday & lots of places are closed that day.
