A plan to ease the one-piece cabin baggage restriction for airline passengers
in January could lead to mass confusion, airport officials say.

The Department for Transport has said more than one piece will be allowed
after 7 January, provided airports have purchased improved security scanners.

Several apparent contradictions in that story, not least that the "more
hand baggage" rule is being driven by BA in London, when BA is one of
the airlines cracking down on baggage themselves. I wonder if it's
because they are seeing a reduction in business from people (especially
transit passengers) being nabbed at Heathrow after they've blagged their
way past check-ins with too many bags?

The TV news didn't mention that the chap from Liverpool Airport was also
an industry spokesman (I wondered how he got to have his moan about
small airports). But he's being disingenuous, because the low-costs
(such as primarily use places like Liverpool) have their own very
stringent rules, including charging for hold bags, so the passengers
really have no excuse for misunderstanding what the rules are.

The main problems I see are people who can't count beyond one - and who
think that a hangbag isn't a bag; or who think a baby buggy plus nappy
bag plus backpack plus carry-on plus bag of toys, etc is "one bag".
Although some airports in Europe allow "one bag plus handbag/laptop-bag"
which could either be a confusion factor, or a good way to explain a
relaxed rule here.

Personally, I'm sticking to one bag and a liquid baggie!

My life would be so much easier if I could have a (sensible sized)
roll-on plus a laptop (shoulder) bag. That's allowable just about all
over the world. (In any event my liquids could be in an outer pocket on
the rollerbag and easy to get out if required).

As it is I have to do the following:

Take four bags to the airport: Roller, laptop, liquids-bag and
carrierbag (the latter two inside the roller).

Just before security take out the laptop and liquids, and put them in
the carrierbag. Squeeze the now thinner laptop bag inside the roller.

Go through security. If they absolutely insist (and none has taken it
that far, but several almost have) I could take the laptop and liquids
out of the carrierbag (to hand-carry not in an outer bag), and stuff the
carrierbag in my pocket.

The result of all this is four things going through the x-ray machine:
Jacket, rollerbag-with-laptop-bag-inside, naked laptop and liquids-bag.
Five if they want shoes. [I put all my metal objects in my jacket, as I
have done since way before all this recent extra screening, so that
saves one trayfull].

Just after security, remove the laptop bag from the roller and re-pack
the laptop and liquids (and now empty carrierbag). On the plane the
rollerbag goes in an overhead, and the laptop bag under the seat in
front.

There is some unstated agenda in using a "3D" x-ray machine. Is it so
that liquids and/or laptop don't need to be separated out? Otherwise all
that happens is that I'll send five things through (six if shoes
included). If liquids and laptop can stay inside separate bags it could
be down to three: Jacket, roller and laptop bag (four with shoes).

I thought BA were cracking down on checked luggage. They proposed more
freedom on carry ons about a month before the new government rules were
brought in (in rather a hurry)
