My life would be so much easier if I could have a (sensible sized)
roll-on plus a laptop (shoulder) bag. That's allowable just about all
over the world. (In any event my liquids could be in an outer pocket on
the rollerbag and easy to get out if required).
As it is I have to do the following:
Take four bags to the airport: Roller, laptop, liquids-bag and
carrierbag (the latter two inside the roller).
Just before security take out the laptop and liquids, and put them in
the carrierbag. Squeeze the now thinner laptop bag inside the roller.
Go through security. If they absolutely insist (and none has taken it
that far, but several almost have) I could take the laptop and liquids
out of the carrierbag (to hand-carry not in an outer bag), and stuff the
carrierbag in my pocket.
The result of all this is four things going through the x-ray machine:
Jacket, rollerbag-with-laptop-bag-inside, naked laptop and liquids-bag.
Five if they want shoes. [I put all my metal objects in my jacket, as I
have done since way before all this recent extra screening, so that
saves one trayfull].
Just after security, remove the laptop bag from the roller and re-pack
the laptop and liquids (and now empty carrierbag). On the plane the
rollerbag goes in an overhead, and the laptop bag under the seat in
front.
There is some unstated agenda in using a "3D" x-ray machine. Is it so
that liquids and/or laptop don't need to be separated out? Otherwise all
that happens is that I'll send five things through (six if shoes
included). If liquids and laptop can stay inside separate bags it could
be down to three: Jacket, roller and laptop bag (four with shoes).
