Does anyone know if there are airlines for inexpnsive travel between
Mexico City and Guadalajara. It is a short flight, but the price seems
high for the "regular" airlines. I was thinking of something on the
order of RyanAir or easyJet in Europe.

There's Aviacsa, but they're not much cheaper.

It's about the same difference as NYC to Buffalo, so it's not
surprising that it costs about the same.

Aero California and Aviacsa are the two small carriers you can check. They
often have fare sales.

Keep in mind that the smaller operators don't have a great safety record.

I was considering Aviacsa to get from Cancun or Merida to
Mexico City and looked for safety records. I found nothing
to indicate problems with them - can you provide some
support for that comment?

There was this comment in Epinions in 2001:
http://www.epinions.com/content_2332467332

However, I have no idea of the competence of that writer.

Aviacsa doesn't seem to be big enough to get a mention in
the various air accident statistics sites.

According to www.oag.com (use the "who flies where" link on the right side)
the following airlines fly that route (but I think there are a few other
airports near Mexico City to consider too):
Airline Name Airline Code
Aero California JR
Aeromexico AM
AVIACSA 6A
Interjet 4O
Mexicana de Aviacion MX
Volaris Y4

Thanks for the info. The prices I found looked good until the fees and
taxes were added in. I thought that there might be cheap prices because
so many other things in Mexico are reasonably priced.

In Mexico, especially between Mexico City and other large cities like
Guadalajara, multi-class bus services are provided by several companies and
operate with great frequency. "First Class" busses have reserved seats and
are likely to carry more upscale pax than Third World (or US economy)
flights. I first rode Mexican busses back in 1957, Laredo/Cd.
Mexico/Cordoba,VC & RTN and have done so on several occasions since.

I will admit to having seen a sad accident once long ago. One Winter night
in the desert of Chihuahua, a poor and weary traveler - likely heading North
for the Rio Bravo and golden opportunity - had reclined upon the pavement,
hoping to extract a little heat from the surface warmed by the sun all day.
A couple of busses shattered his dream, messily.

Mexican driving customs hard for furriners to become accustomed.......

In the mountains, Mexican drivers may turn of their headlights for a moment
to catch the glow of a set of oncoming lights around the next dark bend.
Always causes a "chilly dip" in the pit of the stomachs of those unready for
the darkness...

I thought that Aero California had been closed down for safety reasons,
but it seems they're back. They had the distinction of operating some of
the oldest surviving DC-9's in North America.

It is more of a general comment on smaller operators in Mexico. Aero
California had a couple of accidents, and lost their operator's license
for a period of time, but is flying again. There have been a number of
accidents involving other small airlines in the country. They are all so
small, that any statistics on a particular carrier would difficult to
use.

The large carriers (Aero Mexico and Mexicana) are both fairly large, have
relatively good safety records, and for all intents are both owned by the
same people.

A number of Mexican companies will only allow their employees to fly on
the larger carriers, if they fly on a particular route.

The "RyanAir" of Mexico is VivaAeroBus, but they do not fly that route.

It's a cartel route - Aeromexico and Mexicana (the only 2 operators of
MEX - GDL) charge the same price.
None of the Mexican budgets fly that route.

Aviacsa fly there. A quick tester for a return flight next
week gives rates from US$37.50 to US$70.54 each way.
http://www.aviacsa.com/english/tickets/discount_packages/web.cfm

I flew Aviacsa in April from Merida to Mexico City. I bought
the ticket over the web a few months earlier.

I was pleasantly surprised at the service, the quality of
the aircraft and the smoothness of the flight.

I don't know of any airlines that are the 'cheap' ones but I usually look on sites like these for the cheapest deals:

http://www.skyscanner.com/

http://www.cheapoair.com/

Even the more normal (or expensive) airlines can have cheap prices on sites like these.
