Which is the official currency of St Martin?. Is it the Euro or the $?. Can
both currencies be used in the island with no problem at all?.

On the dutch side the official currency is the Antillean Guilder or
Netherlands Antilles Florin (NAF) and on the French side it is the Euro
(EUR). On both sides however the US$ is accepted.

1 EUR = 1,24 USD 1 USD = 1,24 EUR
1 USD = 1,77 NAF 1 NAF = 0,56 USD
1 EUR = 2,20 NAF 1 NAF = 0,45 EUR

In some places on the Dutch side you can use the Euro but the rates aren't
so good for you then.

You have already been given the correct answer.

The US$ is the defacto common currency of both sides. Even in the small
grocery store in Orleans (French side), prices are posted in US$, not euros.
This store doesn't do much tourist business - just locals.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
