My husband and I are planning a trip to Cancun in October. We are late
fifties. Not party animals anymore. Love to walk on the beach, hang by the
pool, enjoy quite dinners and romantic settings. We do not need a lot of
activities other than snorkeling, etc. We would like a great atmosphere,
good food, and plentiful drinks. Will the El Dorado Royale be a good match
for us?

Please let me hear any feed back from any of you who have stayed at this
resort.

I would also like suggestions of other resorts that might fit our needs..

Thanks in advance. And if anyone needs advice on cruises, let me know....
We have been on many of those, but this will be our first all-inclusive.

Phyllis

The El Dorado Royale would be the ideal place for everything you have
mentioned. It is an extremly relaxing resort with lots of
opportunities for rest and romance.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

My husband and I were at that resort in July. NEVER again! It is poorly
runned and it had to be the worst vacation ever.I booked thru funjet and
I guess they had the same complaints they gave us $100 credit toward our
next trip.That tells you something.

The only time I see Marley1964 post is to slam the El Dorado Royale.
She had a bad experience there but she just won't get over it. Most
posts about the EDR on all message boards are positive.

Thanks for your response Marley. Can you tell me just what made your trip
so horrible? I have heard a lot of positive about this particular resort
and I am very interested in your experiences there. Other than complaints
about the smell originating from the adjoining land, and the not so perfect
beach, I haven't heard much negative. Please fill me in on your experience.

I have been reading reviews on trip reviews on other sites on the net and
most are very favorable.

Why do you consider it poorly run?

The resort itself was poorly runned, the beach was awful if you don't
mind ugly sandbags floating in the beach area-I am a huge beach person.
You have to make an appt to use their restaurants. When we got to our
room-ocean front 1st floor the doorwall lock was broken and you couldn't
lock it,I didn't feel safe having our room open like that.We called down
to the desk and it took forever to get it fixed-it never got fixed my
husband had to do it.The sunken in tub wasn't working. All in all it
wasn't a great experience. The whole resort smelled like sewer.
Literally,this place stinks!

Marley,

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry that you had a bad experience. Have you
been to any of the other all-inclusives in Cancun that you would recommend?

It is nice to hear other's perceptions of a property. We have heard almost
all of your complaints made by others concerning the EDR on other sites, but
for every one negative we have seen several positives. That said, we have
booked a four night stay at the EDR. Wish us luck! I am excited about our
trip and will post a review on our return. We are booked for Oct. 9-13.

As I posted on my first post concerning the EDR, my husband and I have been
on numerous cruises, but have never been to an all inclusive resort. We have
always been amazed at how peoples perceptions differ. We have been on many
cruised that we thought were wonderful and found out after returning home
that others thought they were pure hell!

Thanks Dave for your response to my questions.

I would love to hear other feedback concerning the EDR.

Phyllis

All-inclusive resorts are great. No worries on paying for meals and
watersports. We have gone to Aruba and Jamaica all inclusive and love
them.As for Cancun.....I have been there but not at an all inclusive.I
didn't care for Cancun too many beggars and drunks.I don't care for
Mexico anymore.I have also been to Acapulco.I hated that too. I hope you
have a better experience than we did.

Mar. 3-10/05 I just got back from EDR one word PARADISE! It was absoutely beautiful. The staff was wonderful, administration has left to be desired (what's new w/admin) it wasn't difficult making dinner reservations but the choice of times are slim, best when you check in to make your reservations right away and just so you know they will direct you a table on the other side of the lobby (you'll see the line-up) but there is a table right beside where you check in and you can make reservations there as well but this is very well kept secret as I only found out my second last day. You can make reservations up to 3 days in advance. Times easliy available are after 7:00 don't wait too long then you will get the dreaded 10:00 pm times. I have to say though it is well worth the wait the food is fantastic, my favourite was the Cocotal and the moonlight dinner I would highly recommend. Remember it is all Haute Cusine and don't be shy to ask for doubles. As for tanning, there is no designated spaces but topless is OK around the pools and beach. Careful you may get a camera happy person taking pictures, I witnessed this. As for check-in expect your room to be delayed this seems to be normal practice as I spoke to many repeat vacationers, also if you checked out their website is says clearly check in time is not until 3:00, so bring your bathing suit in your carry-on so you can change and enjoy the place while you wait for your room. As for the smell, it just around the back part of resort from the jungle, it is a sulphur smell, it is part of the eco system, there is a write up about in the rooms. The sand bags in the water are to reduce the big waves since the resort has older people who would like to enjoy the ocean, I liked it, I swam out and laid on top for a great tan! I would go back in a flash.
