We're looking at a cruise on Emerald Princess next year, having just
finished one on Diamond Princess. Can anyone suggest a good source for
finding her theater seating capacity? Diamond's Princess Theater has 900
seats for 2670 passengers, and it doesn't take a math genius to see that it
gets filled to capacity, especially when the shows are popular and run only
2-3 times. We were turned away more than once because we couldn't find a
seat and I hesitate to book another cruise without knowing the theater
seat-to-passenger ratio. I've not found this info online anywhere, but I
bet some of you can tell me where to look. I also want to dig up the same
info on Crown Princess and Ruby Princess also.
Thanks for any help.

I have never seen people turned away on my Princess sailings but I
think you would find the same ratio on all the Princess Grand Class
ships. If this is a big issue for you I suggest going on Royal
Caribbean's Voyager and Freedom Class ships. There are always empty
seats on those in the Theater.

On the Crown, Emerald and I would assume the same on the Ruby, the
theaters may be small but the large production shows are shown on more
then one night. There are also many entertainment options every night.

On our recent Emerald Princess sailing they gave us a "cruise planner"
which showed the entertainment schedule for the entire cruise. This
should be in your Patters the first day.

You might want to go to the cruisecritic.com Princess board, someone
there might know the exact sizes of the theaters.

We were on the Emerald in January and the theater did fill-up for the
production shows. Best bet is to arrive at least 30 minutes before the
show - find a good seating area, have a cocktail and relax!! I do believe
the show room on the Grand and Golden are slightly bigger but good seats
fill-up as fast.

We found that the show lounge on the Diamond filled much quicker than the on
the Grand. I suppose it was because of the total number of people on board.
Of course they have the same show offered on another evening if that's any
consultation. No matter what Princess ship we go on we still have to get
there at least 30 minutes before the show starts to avoid seating problems.

THe grand class we have never had a problem but we have avoided the
Caribbean and her sisters since they have about 600 more passengers
but the same size theater since they stuck the ectra passanger deck
onto the Grand class to build these ships.

Well, on Diamond Princess we arrived 45 minutes early for a show and found 3
seats scattered here and there for the 4 of us, so we left to go find
something else to do. On 2 other nights we got there about an hour before
only to find all 900 seats either filled, or being "saved" in large
quantities, a violation of the Princess policy even tho it wasnt being
enforced, even halfheartedly.
We learned our lessons, and later when there was a show we really wanted
to see, we took something to read and got there 90 or more minutes ahead.
Guess that's a survival tactic you learn when you find yourself on a boat
with too few seats/too many people. And that's precisely why I want to
find a lower ratio of passengers to seats before I lay out big money for
another cruise.

Generally I found the same thing on the Golden and the Crown....I think
that main theater is basically too small....plus the personal choice
phenomena interacts with the show times in not really good ways....for
people in traditional dining. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

Jeff, I agree with you about personal choice making it harder to find
seats.

I know what you're talking about & for a few years now we've been going PC
dining (eating before 6 PM) & it permits us to get to the shows & still get
seats. Princess likes to hype the PC option but doesn't let you know about
the consequences of the traditional option. I realize that we could see the
second show but we would miss something else schedule at that time so we
continue to eat early to avoid the major crowds.

I do agree there are to few seats on the new Grand Class ships. Did you
find this at the second show when there were two shows in the same evening?
For the most part on the Crown Princess we had no problem getting seats at
about 30 minutes before show times at the first shows. But by 15 minutes
before they were pretty much full. And believe it or not, they were
actually enforcing the no saving policy. As people walked in near the show
time, they were directing them to seats people were trying to save.

Has anyone ever seen a problem with saving an individual seat for a spouse?

Not unless you are a Mormon and have 8 wives. <vbg>

I think the issue isn't one person saving seat for husband/wife..... but
people who try to save 6 seats to an entire row for people who many times
never bother to show up.

I know what you mean. On our last Diamond P cruise I saw a couple trying to
save about 30 seats in the lower rows for their group. Luckily for them the
most of group did arrive within moments but I was sitting there wondering
just how long their empty seats would last. It would have been interesting &
entertaining to have seen the commotion.

Usually not. But on the Crown Princess at the very last minute before show
time, they directed people to those seats also.
