Archived from groups: rec>travel>air (more info?)

I am planning a trip to Europe next summer and am starting to look at fares
from LAX to several locations. Going to the various popular internet sites that
offer fares (Travelocity, Orbitz, Cheap tickets, etc) I find the fares to
Copenhagen or Paris or Zurich to be about $800 - $1000 or more. This seems
rather high.

Are there airlines that offer lower fares that are not listed on these popular
sites (similar to the fact that Southwest is not listed for American flights)?
Are there other sites that might show lower fares that I do not know about.
Sould I be searching the individual airline sites?

Thanks for any advice on searching for the lowest fares.
Rick

If this is in the peak season (July-August) then fares are always high.
Try travelling in May or June to get a better fare.

There aren't any no-frills airlines that fly longhaul yet. The closest
you ca get are the charter flights, but they don't go to LAX (AFAIK).

Look everywhere. Ask your travel agent. You've already got an idea of
fares. You might find it's cheaper to fly into one location (e.g.
London), stay there a few days and then get a flight into Europe.

I know Aer Lingus have good transatlantic fares in the opposite direction,
so look at LAX-Dublin and then use DUB as a starting point for the rest of
Europe.

Non-direct flights are often cheaper than direct or nonstop flights.

If you use DUB as a starting point, you can travel via Ryanair (a No Frills
operator) to most of europe and they are very cheap. Take a look at their
website <a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.ryanair.com" target="_blank">www.ryanair.com</a>

NEXT summer? Don't waste any time shopping before next February. It's too
early for them to assess demand yet or size up the competition so the fares
are all high.

$800 from California during peak summer to Paris or ZRH isn't really a
bad fare. I paid $1500 the summer before last to go from SFO into Paris
and out of Rome. Fare are quite decent this summer. Next summer, they
could be higher or lower, but you aren't going to know that until next
spring.

Personally, if I could find a SFO to CDG for $800 for next July or
August, I would take it.
