I am planning a trip to Europe and I was wondering if it would better
to go with a study abroad program, a service organization or with a
private tour group. I was also wondering where are the best places to
go. Any thoughts or suggestions just let me know.

Europe is a pretty large place with many different countries and
cultures. Books have been written about what are the "best" places to
go.

My thoughts and suggestions are that you should go read some guide
books in your bookstore first.

Hi,

if you can swing the study abroad program it's the way to go... it'll
have you there longer and IN the community.

"service organizations" are all over the place, some are just scams,
some are legit.

the french have an au pair program where you go to language school part
time, tend some kids part time, and get a stipend.

a private tour... bottom of the list... maybe good for a first trip
BEFORE a year abroad.

Really on you can answer these questions. In general if you are younger the
study thing is nice as it gives you exposure and a place to stay. You can
take your time. On the other hand the course of study is sometimes intense
and ties you down.

Research an area that you would like to see. Ask your self what is your
budget for time and money. Figure out what you can afford and do it.

Tours work best for people on a tight time schedule who can't do the
background work thrmselves or need hand holding for various reasons-or
becasue the nature of the area is such that tour workds well -Parts of Asia
for westerners pretty well require tour services, whereas for most
westerners Europe is close enough to home to figure out.

My first trip to Europe was with a private tour (sponsored
by our local classical music radio station, with emphasis on
operas and concerts). A tour, for your first experience,
has a lot to recommend it - usually transportation and
accommodations, activities (and sometimes meals) are all
arranged, which provides a certain degree of security when
you are in a strange country for the first time in your
life. After that, IMO the best way is on your own, planning
your own itinerary and arranging your own travel and hotels
- which the Internet makes quite easy. Of course, if you
are young enought to be able to qualify for a "study year"
preferably on scholarship), that would probably be ideal.
(Unfortunately, my student days were long, long past, by the
time I managed to travel outside of the U.S.)

It's questions like this that are ruining this ng.

Well, in addition to spam, bickering, and off topic stuff that is.

NONSENSE!!! Smile Questions like that are the raison d'etre
of newsgroups such as this! It may be somewhat naive, but
we were all young and inexperienced once (remember?) and it
allows the seasoned travelers among us to share our
experiences with a new generation of travelers to Europe.

You may well be right, but queries here are always better received
when a modicum of research has been done first. Around 40 countries in
Europe, and you should know roughly where you wanna go!

I disagree. This NG is the perfect place to answer inquiries like
these.

The answer is this: the best way to see Europe is as a prostitute. You
can make oodles of money, come and go (ahem) as you please and meet
all kinds of fascinating people. And their fluids.

London is a good start. From there, you can be whored out to places
like Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. If you get all stretched out, you
can take some of that hard-earned money and enjoy some time off in the
south of France. Once you have earned enough experience, you can
graduate to film production. For this, you need to travel to Moscow.
Put your hair in pigtails and watch the money come rolling in!

I walked from Euston to Holland Park today. At least in NYC, the
pavements (sidewalks) are generally wider. You can't get away from
people in the evening rush hour in London, and a lot of people don't
seem to know how to walk...

Regarding the places, I would start with:

- Vienna, Maine
- London, Kentucky
- Paris, Texas
- Madrid, Nebraska
- Berlin, Maryland
- Rome, Ohio

Still available for details and other suggestions.
