Few people would really care, except for the fact that is a major
diplomatic rift between the West and Russia.

Probably only if the Austro-Hungarian Empire is brought back.

I'm not sure about the significance of that! There is a big
statue of Herman the German (he was the guy who wiped out the
army of Varus in the reign of Emperor Claudius) in New Ulm,
Minnesota!

It will have to be financially positive or the French wouldn't "play along".

Perhaps I didn't explain.

I was just interested in those that didn't want to recognise, purely because
it would legitimise the concept of regions voting themselves independence.

But perhaps this would be the claimed reason, when the real reason was less
politically acceptable.

It's amazing how much fuss is being made about Kosovo. They
announced they would declare independence months ago. Did no-one
really believe them?

Although there are exceptions, Switzerland is an obvious one, it
is interesting that most viable countries have a sea coast and I
wonder how well Kosovo will succeed.

Not necessarily. The Serbs are historically backed by the Russians, and
Putin isn't too happy about this right now. The West, on the other hand, is
supporting independence. History has shown that you only need to light one
fuse in the Balkans to blow up a number of ethnic hatreds.

But the EU has taken care of that, right? We're all mature countries now who
must work together. Wink

True, but you can't blame all of it on Austria and Turkey. They were
latecomers. Each of those countries had their own empires at some point or
another (Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece) and they still believe all those
former territories are part of their nation's birthright, no matter how much
they overlap. For example, three cultures claim the land now called
Macedonia (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia). When Tito was alive, he encouraged
that population to develop a Macedonian identity, but ask a Greek,
Bulgarian, or Serbian, and they'll tell you there are no "Macedonians."

They can sue me if they wish.

Adnan Khashoggi may operate his companies from Switzerland and Liechtenstein
but he banks in Luxemburg.

So do most of the dodgier end of the Arab countries, along with the
National Union of Mineworkers...

Nobody really wants to find out...

Everyone is busy remembering the last time and wondering if bombing them all
back to the stone age would calm them down at all.

On the contrary , "as it's all EU" you're allowed to bring with you any
amount as long as it's for your personal use. Those are the EU tax rules.

Do you know that Switzerland , by international treaties , have free access
to the Rhine being free for international transport. Same applies to Donau.
And the richest country in the world is without a sea coast ?

I used to like Dervla Murphy but then I got suspicious .... no matter
what country, however remote, or the time, she always gets a room for
the night. If there's no hotels, a friendly local puts her up. I just
don't believe it.

At least with Bryson, you know he's making stuff up for dramatic/
comedic effect. But I sometimes wonder if she's from the Chatwin
school of dissembling.
