Who goes travelling to visit those places? (Aside, of course, from the moron
whose goal is to visit every Starbucks on the planet...)

Starbucks in Vienna are full of Americans, and Vienna is a world famous
city for typical viennese-style coffeehouses. Just as an example.

That's not the same as going there /to/ visit those places.

You're doubtlessly correct.

But I've been to Vienna a few times and I've never visited, nor can I
remember seeing, a Starbucks. If I did see one, it would get the same
dismissive sneer I give them here in the US.

Most McDonalds arefilled with local people. Certainly the
McDonalds near the CEngtral Station in Stockholm was full of
Wedes wehn I was there. The only fast food place in Paris I saw
that had a lot of Americans was the McDonalds on the Champs
Elysee, and evn gtht one wasn't all Americans.

In fact, these American franchisees wouldn't survive at all if it
wren't for locals.

I know. By the way, the meaning of the post wasn't
yet-another-Europe-vs-America rant, but just a consideration about the
fact that many of European's downtowns are *really* starting to look all
the same thanks to the unrestrainable spread of multinational brands.

Really? Smile That was very amateurish of them. Or perhaps their trip
research really did consist of booking the first hotel at the top of
each hit-list. Got to be better than sitting in a bus all day.
