Well, I'm about to move to the US and I have my whole life to bring
with me. Every now and then someone here has asked the question, if
the airline would allow to bring any extra baggage in such a case.

I'll be calling the airlines (SAS and BA at least), when I get the
chance, to ask them about it.

But before I do, I'd like to know, has anybody here ever actually
succeeded in this? Or seen it first-person?

If not, I guess I'll have a lot of mailing to do. Though last time
either the USPS or Finland Post Corporation managed to lose over
half of the packet's contents. The parcel arrived intact, though. Smile

We've done this on domestic US flights, most recently last month. However,
we had to pay a fairly steep price -- $150 per extra bag -- to do this. If
I recall correctly, my wife brought up 6 suitcases as part of our move from
Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Once you have your ticket to wherever it is you're going you'd be
entitled to send your extra stuff as unaccompanied baggage. That gives
you a much lower rate than the normal excess baggage charges, although
there's no guarantee it will travel on the exact same flight as you.
You'll have to return to the airport later to clear your baggage
through customs, or you can appoint an agent to collect it for you on
your behalf.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

BA do not give extra allowance to emigrants. Other airlines can and do,
on request. The best thing you can do is call and ask.

That's pretty hefty price for this distance. Renting a truck and driving
the bags up might be cheaper.

They often will agree to give you an additional 10kgs if you request
it in advance.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Agreed, but you've never met my wife -- the thought of her behind the wheel
of a truck for 8 hours is, well, a little frightening. Wink

Well, of course they don't _have_ to. But that still doesn't mean
they won't.

More than likely not. Try shipping.

I will certainly look into that as well. But I believe it's worth
asking, anyway. Often enough, if you're polite and explain yourself
well, people tend to be helpful.

In Australia - and I'm sure in Finland too - there are several companies
which specialise in air freight, including unaccompanied baggage. Their
rates are much, much cheaper than excess baggage rates.
Do a Google - or search your Yellow Pages!
