We're a UK family of 4,including children aged 11 and 13 and are in
the early stages of planning a trip to Australia from December to
February 2004/5. We're hoping to start with a week in Sydney.
Has anyone done a similar trip and can offer advice as to the best way
to travel and where to stay? (Family friendly!)
We are considering camping/hostels and maybe hiring a cheap motorhome
for some of the time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as the
size of Oz and amount of choice is a little overwhelming!

"cheap motorhome" is an oxymoron, unfortunately. And confining a family
to a small van does not make for a good time.
You can rent large cars much more cheaply, and camp.
Consider motels too. For a family of four, a cheap motel suite may
cost about the same as a hostel. I dont think you have the equivalent
in the UK.

Don't try to cover too much ground. With camping, you can set your
own pace, rather than push to meet a schedule.
Get some good guide books - Rough Guide, Lonely Planet etc.

Have fun, Mike.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Have you thought of doing a house exchange and spending a good part of the
summer in Sydney - with some one or two day side trips? Travelling with an
11 and 13 for 2-3 months might be very tiring, depending of course on your
children.

I can recommend the Lane Cove River Caravan Park in Sydney for a family. If
you hire a motorhome, this is a very central place to stay, they also have
cabins which may suit you.

See : <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.lanecoveriver.com/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.lanecoveriver.com/index.html</a>

We have stayed there twice and have been very pleased with it on both
occasions.

Is Des still around? He may have some advice for you

A hired car and staying in units/villas in caravan parks is also a
possibilty - they come with one, two and (sometimes) three bedroom
options, self-catering which is always cheaper. If you don't have your
own linen, you can hire it from the park. You get more room than in a
motel.

Hi There,

Good luck with your plans - it does take a long time, we know from
experience as we help many UK people plan their extended holidays in and
around Australia.
Have a look at our website <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.honatravel.com" target="_blank">www.honatravel.com</a> to start with, and if you need
any help contact us by phone or email with as much info as possible so we
can work it all out together for you.
I agree with the others a Motorhome is not ideal in your case - a car and
Big-4 Camping, Flag Motel Vouchers or even YHA Family Hostels are better
option. First thing is to decide which cities/places are a must to see, then
we can work on the routing and give ideas.

Robin
