I finally booked my flights, I'm leaving on May 21 for Lima through Madrid
(Iberia) and returning on June 12th. In 24 days in a bit of a rush I'll be
seeing south and some of north Perù. Can't wait. Can anyone suggets a couple
of good guidebooks? Something that will tell me more about the history of
the sites, background, and less about bars and restaurants? I'll start
looking on Monday, can't wait.
Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has written about Perù on its web site as an
extremely dangerous place full of terrorism (Sendero Luminoso, Tupac
Amarus), kidnappings and terrible car accidents. They even say that the
brief flight over Nasca to see the lines is terribly risky! God, my hubby is
worried stiff! What we did was get a local guide that will take us all over
the country by car. It seemed the best way, I didn't way to drive, and I
hate groups, wanted a bit more freedom.
Is Perù really that dangerous?? (I don't trust this site, they even tell you
not to go to France, terroristic acts for the elections! )) >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

Been there twice. First time in 2000, when the elections were being held.
Saw demonstrations in Cusco, etc. Never felt in danger on either trip. >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

yeah, out governments always tend to do the "scare tactics" for their
citizens... I was in Istanbul last Sunday when the million people came to
demonstrate for the secular govt, but I've never seen a more peaceful
place... >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

The Shining Path are gone. Peru was dangerous back in the eighties, with
bombings, kidnappings, and targeted murders. Tourists were, for the most
part, unaffected by it, as long as they stayed away from the areas under the
control of the Shining Path. These days, the only thing tourists really
have to fear in Peru are some of the best pick pockets in the world. Don't
worry. Peru is fantastic. Just keep your valuables safe. >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

good grief! how old is this 'warning'?! some people
get robbed in broad daylight but that also happens
in New York, Napoli, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo etc.
everywhere. keep an eye on your stuff, relax and
enjoy your holiday. Peru is fantastic. for me it's
the people that make it special. also, eat as many
succulent baby alpaca steaks as i possibly can! >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

Hey Bianca,
I don't usually post - in fact I never have but this is just so
timely. I jyst came back from Peru. It's the loveliest place you can
visit. Lima of course is wacky as you can imagine a place of 9 million
people would be. Cusco and the whole Inca region is beautiful - the
people are very nice and helpful and amazingly enough evereywhere I
went was amazingly clean.
After a week of goofing around Lima, Cusco and Machu Pichu ( a must
see!!) we went to the Southeast Jungles. We took a flight to Porto
Maldenado and our guides took us up the Tampobata River for 6 days.
( 2 nights at a lodge , 4 nights camping ) . If you go there you will
see the claylicks where the parrots and macaws congregate by the
hundreds every morning - very cool. Mosquitoes weren't bad but the
timy sandflies were a nuisance - use bug spray.
As far as food goes you can try the local favourite - guinea pig
(hmmm) if you aren't a vegetarian but it's overpriced and overated. On
the other hand in Lima you just have to have Seviche - raw fish in
Keylime juice - Sushi move over!!!
Anyway have fun - no worries but always be vigilant as per any trip.
Regards,
Lex

haha! I have no valuables, just my hubby! He's the most valuable "thing" I
have with me
And I lived in Paris for 2 years, people come from all over the world to
learn thievery, they have the world famous International School of thieves.
What me worry???
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

I love ceviche, my parents went to Peru once and they came back and made
ceviche every day for a month. I'm not into meat that much so I guess I'll
pass on the guinea pig
But these scare tactics kill me. I was just reading the Rough Guide to Peru,
and when I got to the gory part that tells you that at 5.000 metres altitude
your brain explodes my hubby took the guide and threw it out (or hid it or
something...). I can't wait, I'm leaving on the 21st.
(Canada? I lived in Toronto for many years, graduated from U of T
Engineering...)
Thanks Lex! >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

Napoli... but I've been to Naples many times and nothing happened, the very
first day I moved to Milano from abroad my pocket was picked and my wallet
was stolen...

well.. there are dangerous zones in Lima that you should avoid by night (
hotels in the centre like Sheraton are cheaper as they are in a very bad
part of the town,, )
The rebel army was in the region of Ayacucho.. actually it is not very far
from Lima in Kms. but very afr in time.
do not worry about Peru. Like all places in South america.. people are very
friendly and helpful
Of course. there are pickpockets.. but mainly in Lima and Cuzco near the
train station.
In the other part of the country.. nad in most parts of Lima. you are safe
at daytime and night time. >> Stay informed about: Finally booked for Peru |

I'm not planning on staying out at night, and I'm only going to be in Lima
one night, the first one. I'm staying at the San Isidro Libertador , it
looks safe enough..
