Finding quickest flights to London

Do any carriers have quicker flights to England than others? I just got back from London and flight from Newark-London was 6 hrs which wasn't bad but the flight back was 8 hrs! The pilot took a route that was extremely North: over Ireland, 600 mi. S. of Iceland and Greenland, into upper most part of Quebec and over Montreal. I did not enjoy this flight at all. It took forever. I don't want to do that again. It was with Continental which is a good airline. I suppose most carriers take this route back to NYC or N.J.?
