Hi,
I'm planning to go to New Orleans in a few weeks. I found the
restaurant 'The Marigny Brasserie' and 'Feelings Cafe'. Are these two
restaurant in safe area?
Can I park my car around the restaurants? I tried to go to other
local restaurant instead of in Frech Quarter.

If you have any advice, please feel free to let me know.

Thank you.

yes, the neighborhoods are quite safe, and if you can't find on the street
parking (on FRenchmen) there are big ground level lots one block away on
Esplanade.

I live halfway between these two restaurants. There should be plenty of
parking around Feelings, and I also think they have valet.

have fun!

btw, Patrick. If you are a tourist and NOT arriving by car - for goodness
sake's, don't rent one. This is a small city, and parking is difficult and
expensive - especially in the Quarter. There are ample cabs (and ani-mule
drawn carriages) everywhere, and then you don't have to worry about "safe
parking."

If you don't see a cab right outside of your restaurant, the host/ess will
happily call one for you.

I always like "Feelings" - its very romantic, and the food is top notch.
The Brasserie is OK, it does a good business, just not one of my personal
favorites.

Across the street from it is one that doesn't get much press, local
fave......Adolpho's - (above the Apple Barrel Bar) creole Italian, seafood
mostly. Very small place. The chef will pretty much make you anything in
the above genre, if they have the ingredients.

If you haven't selected a swamp tour, I always suggest Zam's - one that the
hotels don't send people to (too far) - but easy to combine w/ Oak Alley,
for example.

I think the people at Zam's are "most authentic."

I'd call ahead for times, however.

Patrick:

Cajun Gwailo is correct - don't get the car. New Orleans was built for horse
and buggy, not cars and parking is very hard to find and expensive. At most
hotels you will be charged extra for parking. And the parking enforcement
officers ("meter maids") are numerous, voracious, and without pity. They
will tow your car in a second and it will take days to get it back. Besides,
this is not the easiest city to find your way around in.

Taxis here are inexpensive and plentiful. You will probably spend less on
them than a rental car. The French Quarter is MUCH too small to drive in and
no one does. To give you some idea, you can walk from Canal St on the
upriver side of the Quarter to the other side at Esplanade Ave in about 25
minutes, 15 if you walk fast. The area the restaurants you mentioned are in
(the Faubourg Marigny) is right next to the Quarter - a couple of blocks
away.

As far as tours go, almost all of them will pick you up at your hotel. For
instance, Tours by Isabelle (one of my favorites, see
http://www.toursbyisabelle.com/ ) will pick you up at your hotel, take you
all the way to most of the plantations, or a swamp tour, or whatever and
bring you back afterward. See their FAQ at that website for details. They
charge no extra for this service. Other tours pick you up at specific hotels
and return you there for free.

If you want to see the city, the St Charles Ave streetcar will take you to
see the beautiful homes and architecture as well as other restaurants along
the way for only $1.25. Most other attractions (IMAX Theater, Aquarium,
etc.) are very near the Quarter.

And if you really think you need a car, Enterprise Car Rental has two
locations near the Quarter and they'll rent you one on a moments notice and
bring it right to your hotel (1939 Canal Street, (504) 522-7900 or 1019
Baronne Street,(504) 593-9068). Keep it for a day instead of your entire
stay and you'll save a pile of money. BTW: The cost to rent a car at the
airport is significantly higher than renting it in town.

I hope you have a GREAT time!
