| Last time when I flew a B-737 and sat on an aisle seat, I turned on my
DeLorme Earthmate GPS connected to my laptop. But I could not receive GPS
signal. Is it because my seat is too far away from windows? Thanks.

Could be, generally the GPS antenna/pod is located on the outside of
the plane it's likely that a handheld would suffer interference from
the fuselage.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Use of GPS in Flight |

I haven't had any luck at all unless it's been held right to the window.

Try to get a window seat on the south side of the aircraft (port side
flying east to west and starboard side flying west to east) within the
U.S. Note that AA does not allow the use of a GPS inflight. I used
my Garmin several times prior to 9/11. The tracking feature was
pretty neat .

I have a Garmin eMap and it works fine if I hold it up against the window at
the bottom edge. It can take five minutes to find a fix because it typically
can find only 3 or 4 birds. The results are interesting--you get the ground
speed, the altitude, and a running map view of the ground with the built in
basemap--how many times have you wondered where you were and what city/town
you are passing over? I've only used it a few times and I have not had any
issues with FAs. >> Stay informed about: Use of GPS in Flight |

Because when ever one of their planes head off course and the crew
lies to the passengers about what their current status is then no one
on board will be the wiser.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Use of GPS in Flight |

yep, definately b/c of where you were seating, I usually use a large blob of
'blu-tack' to keep it fixed there - most of the time once the FA's know what
it is they are happy though keep coming back to check on it.
I usually get a fairly good fix - did a run AKL-NRT not long ago - got a
flight plan from MS Flight Sim, reformatted the file for Oziexplorer and
uploaded the way points to my Magellan M330 - for most of the flight (
except manouvres on depature and approach was never more than 10m off my
route.

pretty much - my magellan seems to TOTALLY lose signal about 3' away from
the window (it even has a hard time when the unit is in the seat back
pocket) and I've NEVER been able to sync in an aisle seat

note that if you have a small one without an obvious antenna it looks like a
gameboy (and mine is bright yellow, too) - otherwise if it's in a small
nylon bag they never know about it - the worst that can happen BTW is that
they tell you to turn it off. The major drawback to US based GPS is that
the maps are non-existant outside US/Canada (extra fee, eh) or in Europe I
haven't figured out how to get maps

If you have Garmin Etrek models you can buy the world map for around $95.

which is probably better - one of my co-workers has a marine version and he
hooks it to his laptop for navigating his sailboat. The major drawback to
the magellan is that it only RECOGNIZES 128mb max memory and then under
pro0test - needs to have the parameters tweaked manually

I have the Etrek Vista and I bought the World Map. I have used the Worldl
map for my travels in OZ, Netherlands and Germany. The detail is not that
great but is ok. I just load the unit right before I go. When I use the
unit in a airplane it uses the altimeter function to give me the altitude
and typically gives me around 8000 feet, when I request GPS altitute I get
the 30K+ feet.
