I am staying at MB in a few weeks. Any comments on the golf course next to the hotel. Ratings of other courses would be appreciated.

Very nice, super expensive. Check out www.golflv.com for details.

I played at Bali Hai earlier this month and really enjoyed it. Despite
its location on the Strip, it is not a flat course. The layout has
some really nice holes with elevation, and the condition of the course
was excellent. The palm trees and imported sand are a bonus too. It's
not your typical Vegas desert course. I'd rate it a 8.5 out of 10.

However, be prepared to shell major $$$ to play here, but it is
located at a very convenient location if you're staying on the Strip.
Here's the website:

I have a cousin that lives in Vegas and he asked his wife if she would
mind if he remarried if she died before he did. His wife said go ahead
but don't let her use my golf clubs. My cousin said " don't worrey,
she's left handed!

I have explored golfing in Las Vegas and have found it to be VERY expensive.
So expensive that I have given up the thought of playing there. I just can't
pay their prices.

check out www.golfcourse.com for info (including course ratings) on LV area
courses. For the person that said they had given up on playing there due to
the price I know they are pricey ($150-$200 on average for nicer courses and
that doesn't include places like Shadow Creek) but I would encourage you to
splurge some time (what is a couple hundred once a year on a trip where you are
probably gambling multiples of that) and enjoy some of the great courses!

I can splurge where I live and splurge for less than Las Vegas rates.
Perhaps if tourists would not pay those high rates they would come down. As
a casual player it isn't worth it to me to pay $150 and up a round.

To each his own and I certainly can't tell you what to spend you money on.
However, I wouldn't blame tourists paying the greens fee totally for the cost
of golf. There are numerous places besides LV where golf costs this amount or
more (Phoenix, Hawaii, premium California courses, etc). Sure these are
inflated a little due to the destinations but the cost of maintaining a premium
quality golf course (especially in the desert) is expensive and this is passed
on to the players. You could extend your logic that if players wouldn't pay
whatever greens fee the rates would probably be lowered (or if people wouldn't
pay the price for Bellagio buffet, Venetian rooms, etc they would be lowered
to) but then you would have IMHO lower quality courses and less choice.
Frankly I love playing on a top notch course and have no problem paying
$150-$200 to do so but, like I said at the beginning, to each his own. We all
place certain values on things and not on others - hell I wouldn't take Opera
or Ballet tickets if someone gave them to me Smile

The casinos support those outrageous greens fees by comping rounds for
medium/high rollers.

Locals with valid ID can shop around and get some decent last-minute
deals on unbooked teetimes, but for the average tourist, golf rates here
are a ripoff compared to other southwestern locales.

That said, you can expect to spend $150-$200 for a six-hour round of
tourist golf; or you can blow that amount much more quickly at the
tables.

Then how do you explain that Phoenix has rates in the same range for top end
courses and there is little in the way of comps to explain this? I realize
there is some VERY limited comping from the Indian Casinos but not anywhere
near LV. And last time I checked Phoenix was also in the Southwest. Hell, I
payed $100 or more for a decent course around Dallas when I lived there (11
years) on a weekend to be backed up in 5-6 hours rounds on a course that is
overbooked. I would gladly pay an extra $50-$100 to pay a LV resort course. I
realize many people don't agree but I frankly don't see golf in LV as too
expensive for what you get especially, as previously mentioned, you can lose a
hell of a lot more in a casino during the same time. Vacations are all about
splurging whether that is great golf courses, gourmet restaurants or shows.

I tend to agree with you a bit. I don't think it's that comps that
drive up greens fees, it just that people are willing to pay a lot of
money for stuff in Vegas. If the courses can get away with charging
those rates, they will.

To me, its not the greens fees that are too high, its the opportunity
cost. My time is town is short; there are a number of things that I
can only do in Vegas. Golf isn't one of them.
