Anyone know anything abt a good basic snorkel equip set
to buy?
Live in a small town..... no local shops to "look" at
anything.
I need a "specific" recommendation for what combo set
to buy.
Im two hrs north of St Louis....and can drive down
there and get something
Matter of fact i saw a TUSA set (mask, snorkel, fins)
for sale in Costco down there. Is that a good set to
buy? >> Stay informed about: Good snorkel equip to buy? |

If you're going to do a lot of snorkeling for the rest of your life, please
go to a good scuba shop and try out a LOT of masks and pick a good one that
fits you well. The snorkle is easier to pick... don't get any of that cheap
Target crap, please.

Personally, for the sometime snorkeller, I think these are largely commodity
items and one is pretty much the same as the other. I mean, if you did not buy
your stuff, you would be using whatever (literally) fell off the boat.
I would look for a snorkel that has some sort of protection at the top to
keep out sea water and/or a valve or something at the crook at the bottom so
you blow out water that gets in. I woudl , if possible actually try on the
mask to make sure it fits your face.
I am sure I will flamed for this...

Anywhere near Bartonville? See the "do-dive-inn".
There are a number of SCUBA shops in St Louis. Shop a couple at least. Get
good solid expert advice on mask fit.
A lot of blisters can be avoided by 'aqua sox'.

Don't know them. The most important thing is to try on a lot of masks with
someone who can help you pick one that fits well. I've been using the same
booties, fins, mask and snorkle for maybe 18 years or so. It'll save money
in the long run to get good stuff to start with.

Don't get the one from Costco. The mask was pretty good. I didn't
like the snorkel. The action to block water coming the tube wasn't
smooth. I wound up taking it off because it bothered more than simply
having it open. The strap came off one of the fins. I probably got
what I paid for and I did get to snorkel. If I get to go again, I'll
probably go shopping again.
When you get something, how about posting here what it was. Thanks

I bought a set before my first trip to the carribean -- it cut my feet
after an hour or so in the water -- and the mask never worked very well
it is pretty hard to know how something works trying it in some small
town sports shop -- and a 'set' that works for me might not for you
if you are going to an area with a lot of snorkeling options, I'd rent
equipment there. In St. John for example you can rent very soft easy to
wear fins -- they go on kind of like slippers as well as mask and
snorkel for a week -- definitely worth it -- you dn't have to carry the
bulky items with you either -- and if the mask leaks or the fins don't
fit right, you take them back and try again<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Good snorkel equip to buy? |

says...
As others have said buy a good product.
For fitting mask, push it against your face without the use of the
strap. If it creates a "suction" and sticks to your face, then it will
have an adequate seal and little or no water will get in.
For the snorkel. There are two critical issues. First, how does it feel
in your mouth. Second, does it have a drain valve a the bottom. The
drain valve is very important. The drain valve does two things. One it
lets the majority of the water drain out the bottom of the snorkel. (It
has to do with the weight of water...think about it) Two, it makes it
easier to purge water that remains in your snorkel.
Consider socks when you use your fins.
Also, remember to wear a Tshirt and/or sunscreen when snorkeling.
have a great trip
