On behalf of Carly Provan-Politis, the president of Chios Animal Welfare
Society, I post the following cry for help:

Dear Friends,

It has just become known to me that on Tuesday 9Th October poison is being
given free to all people in Chios from the Chios Municipality... The mayor
Dr.Petros.Broulis has announced on local television and also the local
newspapers in Chios that he is giving this poison free.. Now it is for sure
this poison will kill off thousands of stray, owned cats and dogs in Chios
and is completely wrong and cruel and i really need some help to stop him
doing this, so please i ask of you to write to the mayor and sign, because
this is a urgent situation in Chios and thousands of animals will die and
suffer in pain....

Kind Regards,

Mrs.Carly Provan-Politis
President of Chios Animal Welfare Society www.chiosaws.org

Because they have a rat problem.

Perhaps Regina Schmid has a better solution to this rat problem than the
poison being planned - or perhaps her great love of animals extends to these
adorable rodents too.

Since thousands of years rats and mice spread immensely in places after the
cat population has been wiped out or at least reduced significantly. This
happened in the dark middle ages all over Europe when mainly under the
influence of the catholic church cats were considered to be of hellish
origin and therefore were almost exterminated everywhere. The result was a
Europe-wide increase of rats and as a consequence the outbreak of the deadly
plague.

Also today, there is at least the increase of rats and subsequently an
increase of the diseases they carry with them (not necessarily the plague
again) in all areas where humans before had reduced the cats' population.

So we observe a vicious circle: people lay out poison baits, originally
meant to fight the rats but while the intelligent rats learn to avoid the
poison baits very quick, other animals like dogs and birds AND CATS eat the
baits, die of the poison and again the rats reproduce immensely because of
their natural enemies, the cats, only a few have survived. The wrong
"logical" conclusion of the people suffering from the rats is that there is
more poison necessary, therefore more cats (and other animals) die and more
rats will be born and so on and so on...

Therefore, besides of an unnecessary death toll among cats, dogs and birds -
collateral damage it is called in war terms - wouldn't it simply be wiser
AND cheaper to let the cats live and let them do their natural "job"
properly?

Some people on Chios understand these coherences, some obviously not - and
some, as Marianne assumes, consider them pretty convenient.

Well, the problem is, I guess, that not only the rats that will eat the
poison. And I guess that is pretty convenient for some.

Latest news on Chios mass poisoning action from Vesna Jones:

I was putting off writing again about the mayor of Chios decision to give
out poison to whoever wanted it until I received some photos from Carly, but
I'm still waiting. I have spoken with her this morning and she was amazed
and grateful for such a terrific response to her appeal to write letters to
the mayor etc. I'm sure that like me, you receive numerous requests to
write letters of protest, sign petitions etc, but can we allow the idiotic
mayor of Chios to get away with his lunatic actions???? NO!!! We MUST
respond and in force!!!
Again and again, if necessary!!!

Some of you may have already seen Carly's email below, which confirms that
the poison WAS dished out to people. Whilst the local newspaper Alithia was
very supportive of Carly's society and condemned the mayor's actions, not
one TV channel in the end reported about this insane matter.
I ask you to please write to the mayor again, CONDEMNING his actions and
please copy your email to other addresses below. I was hoping to include
more, but I simply didn't have time to scour the internet. However, if you
have the time to look for & find other newspapers, TRAVEL COMPANIES etc,
please, please do so!!!

Below Carly's email is one which I have just written to the mayor etc.

MAYOR OF CHIOS Petros Broulis: dxios7.RemoveThis@otenet.gr
Chryssa Dile (ministry of agriculture): ka6u016.RemoveThis@minagric.gr
George Frantzeskakis: k9mailbox.RemoveThis@yahoo.com

Dear Friends,
I can't thank all of you enough for the time and effort you all made to try
and help me stop the Mayor of Chios and the local municipality from giving
free poison out today...
I am sorry to inform you all but at 10am this morning myself, Pepi Bouse
and TV stations, Alpha, Antenna and Alithia wachted in pure horror the
handing out of the poison to all Chios residents.. Dr Broulis took no notice
to our Protest.. I watched as hundreds of people lined up for their free
poison and there was nothing i could do to stop it. The poison was given out
to anybody, no checks were made and people were leaving with clear bags of
round blue blocks of poison... I'm absolutely disgusted and urge again
please to write your letters to The mayor of Chios your thoughts and again
to Alithia TV, as they are kindly airing our outrage at 8pm tonight on
Channels Antenna and Alpha.. I as the President of Chios Animal Welfare
Society www.chiosaws.org cant express how scared I am because I just know
that in the coming weeks only myself and our local volunteers will be
dealing with the hundreds of poisoned and dying animals here in Chios.
Carly
========================================

My latest email to the mayor:

Mr Broulis, you must be very proud of yourself!!! What a wonderful example
you are setting for the citizens of your island by giving out 'free poison'
as if it were candy!! You clearly don't care what the world at large thinks
about your insane, barbaric, deplorable, despicable (I could go on) actions.
You may not care, but you can be sure that countless of civilised people
do!! The citizens of Chios who queued up to collect their 'bag' of poison
are the very same people whose livelihood may depend on tourism.

I'm sure you are aware of the fact that hundreds, if not thousands of stray
AND owned dogs and cats, bird and other wildlife, will fall victim to the
indiscriminately scattered poisoned bait. Perhaps if a small child were to
accidentally ingest some of the poison, you would come to your senses ...
alas, too late!!

Your reputation is crossing borders far and wide!! You are not only
degrading yourself and your island, but your country as a whole. You are
ABUSING your position as a mayor and I sincerely hope that your superiors
(nomarchia?) will see fit to suspend you from your job and in due course,
dismiss you! Or perhaps you will be decent enough and resign!

I will not apologise for lack of respect I show you with this letter. You
deserve only contempt!

How long is it since poison was last tried on a major scale in Chios?

If it's any considerable length if time, then it would seem reasonably safe
to assume that Regina's chosen method - to let her favourite pets play with
and eventually kill her slightly less favourite animals - does not work
particularly well.

Yes thanks Marianne, mange tak Surprised)

Of course, if these were kept under some sort of control of their respective
owners, then not many 'pets' would thus succumb. Whether it is a tragedy
that some strays should go the same way as their dumb animal brethren the
rats I wouldn't like to comment on at this juncture - not having been to
Chios (yet!) I do not know to what extent these strays are considered a
plague upon the land of the people who live there.

Chios didn't seem to me particularly bad in this respect compared to many
other islands. Leros for some reason had stray dogs all over the place last
time I was there. Many other islands of course have a cat problem - I think
holidaying Brits are as much to blame for this as anyone. They feed the
strays which of course causes them to multiply even more.

Some people find that cats and dogs eating the poison is a bonus. Was that

Have you tried to keep control of a cat? Wink

That's a pity. It is a wonderful island!

I have been to Chios twice this summer and didn't see a single rat(actually
in the 17 years of going there I have only seen one, but then again I don't
see them at home either, although they are a problem in other areas). Not
many stray cats and dogs either. Yes there are some, shouldnt be any, but
IMHO hardly enough to be considered a plague.
