If I show up in March and want to see some of the nice places along the
coast that are out of town, can buses take me there? or do I really,
really need to rent a car (not a favorite option)?

thanks.

You can see small parts of the coast. If you really want to get out of
town say Peggy's Cove or Luneburg you will need a coach trip or a car.

They were pretty thin on the ground in June so it may be a problem.
Your best bet may be to contact the tour companies. Perhaps they still
offer occasional trips. As to the season it pretty much doesn't start
until mid June.
