Hey, can anyone help convince my mom that I'm gonna be OK when I visit
India this fall? I'm going as part of a school program and don't plan on
doing any sightseeing alone. But she reads about suicide bombers and now
she's afraid I'll be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know
she loves me and just wants me to be safe and all. Help before she tells
me that I can't go.

I am assuming that you will be chaperoned if this is a school trip.

I certainly would not worry about suicide bombers though anything is
possible. The poverty in India is depressing, but there are many
wonderful things to see.

What is the purpose of this school trip? Will you be meeting up with
Indian people who live where you are going? Where in India are you
going? Much will depend on where you are going and what activities
you will be participating in.

You are far more likely to be hit by a car than a bomb. I would tell
you to tell her not to worry, but it will do no good. Find someone her age
(preferably a woman) who she trust and ask them to have a chat with her.

A car? In India, not really.

However, the bombings seem to happen in more industrialized countries,
not India.

In India, I would be more worried about drinking the water and/or
finding a good place to bathe actually than either cars or bombs.

Thanks for the advice, but I wasn't actually asking to be told to brush
up on my culture and the culture of India. There are random acts of
violence in India, and I do realize I have a better chance of getting
food sick, but my question is what to tell my mother to comfort her
without completely dismissing her fears.

I was thinking about driving to the airport to go to India, but have you
seen the way they drive in India??

You can start PJ by giving your mother some information on India. Since
you said you were going with your school I am sure you will have a trip
schedule that will have contact information, which will include an
address and phone number. If you want to comfort her just tell her to
give you a call if she worries. And, if she is complains about the cost
of those calls get her calling card before you leave. This will show
your concern about her feelings. I suggest using OneSuite.com when
calling India. They seem to have the cheapest rates to Asia, plus you
won't have to run to 7/11 to get it.

Good luck on your trip and watch for the food.

In fairness, standards of driving are lower in India than in the USA,
and in major cities the risk of injury in a road accident is certainly
worth consideration. (Try reading the inside pages of the local
newspaper for, say, Hyderabad, and prepare to be appalled.)

As for the OP's question, since this is a school trip the school is
presumably accepting some responsibility for safety issues. She should
encourage her mother to discuss such concerns with the people
organising the trip, and promise that she will do what her teachers
have told her to do.

I repeat, why can't you tell your mom the facts if you know them so
well (I don't think you do)? You seem to be saying the facts don't
matter. If so, go to a psychology or parenting forum - this never
belonged in rec.travel.air to begin with, and you punish charitable
attempts to help anyway.

Have you ever been to India ?
.....appears you think India has no cars, industry, drinking water or places
to bath......you need to get out more often.....
