Hi

We will be heading to Tasmania for about 18 days in February next year.
We have a rough idea on what we want to see and do, but are struggling when
it comes to organising a schedule. So, a couple of questions for everyone.

First off, we are considering hiring a smallish campervan / motorhome.
We've heard that some of the roads aren't great. Is this choice of vechile
wise and are there any stretches we should try and avoid? Anyone who has
travelled via campervan / motorhome... what are the downsides to it?

If we decide to not hire a campervan / motorhome, what is acomodation like
at that time of year (February). Are we wise to book all hotels in advance
or can we trust to being able to find a hotel whenever and where ever?

We are planing on travelling anti-clockwise from either Launceston or
Devonport but just dont know how much time will be spent in each area or how
far to go each day. We dont really want to be rushed to much, but obviously
want to see whatever we can. Can anyone either tell me about there trip or
point to somewhere on the internet that gives details of a similar trip.

For example, travelling from Devonport along the north west coast to
Stanley. Would we be best to travel to Burnie one day and stay there
overnight and do a day trip to Stanley and surrounds the next day, or is it
easy enough to do it all in one day? Any tips or plans like this would be
invaluable.

Thanks

Anthony

18 days will be a nice time to see quite a bit. We went around the other
way for 14 days a few years ago and we are hoping to go again to catch up on
some of the places that we missed.

We were there in November and had a bit of trouble finding accommodation in
a few places. Some of the roads are very steep, narrow and winding so it is
up to you whether you hire a campervan/motorhome. If you hire a car and are
looking for accommodation, consider cabins rather than hotels/motels. It is
much cheaper if you can prepare your own meals in self catering cabins and
there are lots in Tasmania.

when I was home a couple of years ago, we did a trip to Stanley from
Launceston. To be honest, there isn't a lot to see in Burnie. I would
probably be more inclined to make it through to Stanley on the first
day, probably about 4-5 hours drive. Stanley is quite a quaint little
town, and of course a trip up to the "Nut" is worth the visit. a
chairlift takes you up to the top and the views are quite amazing. I
would also recommend doing the Arthur River Cruise as well, which is not
that far from Stanley. Its well wortrh it. Its about a 4-5 hour trip
up the river, and they provide a barbeque lunch in the bush, with
optional bush walks, etc. a very relaxing day.

have a look at this web site it provides some useful information about
the northern region of tassy.

DEFINITELY BOOK IN ADVANCE! Last summer many people who had not done this
experienced problems obtaining accommodation, including in caravan parks. This
was the result of a second vehicular ferry across Bass Strait being introduced:
the number of tourists to Tasmania has increased 60% during the past year (in
contrast with tourism trends elsewhere). With a third ferry (Sydney-Devonport)
commencing mid January 2004 accommodation will continue to be a problem during
the summer season.

I would definitely recommend more than 1 night in this area as there are some
beautiful beaches along this coastline to explore (eg. Boat Harbour Beach) and
the back country off the main highway is just beautiful: also a trip to the
Woolnorth estate west of Smithton and the little town of Stanley would warrant
one day.

I would recommend exploring the various pages of this website at your leisure
which will give you an idea of the places of most interest for you and help you
decide how much time you want to spend where:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/home/index.cfm" target="_blank">http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/home/index.cfm</a>

It also provides itinerary ideas at

There is also a page on road conditions which may help with your decision on a
campervan.

The peak season is now starting to look like October to early May.
