Post subject: Help with vacation planning!
Archived from groups: rec>travel>caribbean (more info?)

I'm planning a 3-4 day vacation with my girlfriend to the Yucatan,
unbeknownst to her. We will probably fly to Cancun b/c that is where we
can fly the cheapest. But, even without having been there, I know we're
going to want to get out of there real quickly cause of all the tourist
stuff/high prices.

I'm looking for someplace chill, romantic, relaxing, and CHEAP (food and
lodging) but with enough amenities that she'll be cool with it. Money is
an issue though, so we don't need too much, just nothing too scummy. Good,
authentic food would be a big plus anywhere.

We're 29 and 30 years old respectively.

The 3 places I was thinking of were Isla Mujeres, Akumel, and Tulum. Can
anyone provide any guidance as to what would be a good choice and where we
might stay, taking into consideration that we won't have much time and we
will be flying in and out of Cancun?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

I

I just came back from there in Sept. I only had a week and I did the same
as you want to. I flew into Cancun and then caught a bus straight away to
Valladolid. I stayed in The Hostel, an old colonial large house, located in
the Park La Candelaria, to 3 blocks from the bus-station and to 2.5 blocks
from the Central Park.
Beds from US$7.02 / ?5.70 / £3.90
Address: Street 35 # 201-F x 42 and 44
Valladolid
Yucatán
Mexico
Phone: + 52.985.62267
Price: budget

There are awesome local cafeterias and restaurants all within walking
distance. While there you can visit a couple of ceynotes, Zaci Ceynote is
right in the middle of the city.
If you stay in Valla you can also see the famous ruins of Chitzen Itza.
Take a local bus(less than a 30 min ride for about $2.00) be sure to go on
the earliest bus 7am, it is quite hot by 11am and there is little to no
shade in the area. Hoardes of tourists come in by the bus load after 9am. If
you want to climb the ruin, be sure to do it first when there are little to
no tourists.
you only need to spend 1 night in valla, then catch a bus to either Tulum or
Isla Holbox (swim with whale sharks) Get the info from the Hostel on how to
get there, be sure to take the approx 2am bus to get to the ferry by 5or 6
spend the day with the whale sharks or just hanging out on this small
island. There are no cars aloud and is an awesome non-crowded place to kick
back and relax. If you stay there you have a choice of hotels around the
main square and lots of local food.
If you decide to go to Tulum, it is very touristy (like Cancun). I stayed
in a hotel on the far edge of town (yellow something with the name sol in
it, very nice $35US with air. (I was there in Sept and it was too hot for
me. You can then take a taxi to the beach, rent a hammock or chair and
relax on the beach all day, If your up to it you can go see the Tulum ruins
near by.. **However, if you seen Chitzen Itza, nothing else will compare.

Isla Mujeres is a local backpacker place and from what I've heard is
becoming very touristy also.
I found the whole Yucatan area to be very high priced for souviners, in
comparison to the rest of Mexico.
hmmm since your only going for 3-4 days, maybe just Valla and Tulum would
suffice. Cancun is only like an hr by bus.
Valla has all the amenities you need bank, post, groceries etc.
bus are very cheap, clean and the roads are good use them often.
check out my site below to see pics and reports on my trip.

finding the cheap flight is the problem, but if you can, here's what you
can do: Go stay in palya del carmen, not way out in the jungle. Book the
blue parrot if you can afford it. blueparrot.com (I think). they have
great night life right there. Playa del carmen is more european, it's
not the giant hotel resort thing, it's a great city. You can eat grilled
fish for lunch for about $6, right there on the beach, the fish was
caught that day. 6 beers on the beach for $6 and an ice bucket. and
fantastic service from the little pubs lined up and down the narrow
beach. Remember I said narrow beach. Not a big sandy deep beach, which
suits me but you might be quiet resort person and not like that

there are little hotels like the Pelicano and others are all up and down
the beach. You can buy a day pass at the big resort hotel if you find
out my advice is not good, but get there early because the all u can
eat/drink day pass expires a 5pm. The food at the big hotel resort is
crap... there are a few big resort type hotels there you can walk too..
may be one day of that would be good.

hope I helped, good luck<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
