I think of you as a kinda stock picking swami, and wanted your opinion on
gaming stocks. They haven't had a good run recently. Wynn, LVSands and
MGM are all down at least 30% from their 52-week highs.
Today however, Wynn was up 7% and LVSands was up 9%. On a day where the
market tanked, that's pretty good. BTW, that "down at least 30%" number
includes today's gains.
I've always heard that when times are bad, you want to own sin stocks.
What does it look like in the Walt crystal ball?
Thanks,
Marshall

When you get done with that, Walt, can you take a look at my 401K and
make sure it's balanced. Also, where can I get a better deal on cable
TV?

My bank requires at least $5,000 for a MMF. My portfolio is somewhere
more than nine dollars and less than, say, a trillion. How does a
Carl's Jr. $6 Dollar Burger look long-term?

Um, I meant which laundromat had the best coin-op screens. But, uh,
thanks anyway, Mr. Moneybags.

I don't know, man. Ol' Swami's been taking it on the chin lately like
everyone else. Even the 2007 AVLV Stock Derby winner, Cameron
International (CAM), is down 20% this year.
LVS or WYNN still seem like too much of a gamble with their high P/E
ratios. I think there could be more downside, especially if there's a
serious recession.
Cramer's advice about picking stocks now that pay good dividends sounds
sensible. I bought some GM preferred (GPM) which he mentioned last
week. It yields over 7-1/2% right now, and GM's long-term prospects
seem to be turning at least mildly better. If the Fed continues to
lowers interest rates, this one could be a good bet.
Another stock I bought recently is UST, which produces smokeless
tobacco like Skoal and Copenhagen and owns several wine brands
including Chateau St. Michelle and Columbia Crest. I made some money
on this one the last time it ran up in 2006. It currently yields about
4.3%. The stock fell around 3% today and I bought more.
If you want to take a flyer on a tech stock, there's Sigma Designs
(SIGM), which I've seen recommended in Forbes and elsewhere in recent
months. They make advanced video processing chips for things like
Blu-Ray players. John Dvorak reported there was a lot of buzz about
Sigma at CES last month. It dropped about 13% today to $43.16, so I
bought some more at a little higher price than what I paid recently.
Disclaimer: none of this should be taken to mean I know what I'm
talking about, although if by some chance you make money, I will of
course take full credit.

If you're worried about the stock market, move some assets into the
money-market fund and wait til the recession storm blows over.
For cable TV, check out the package deals that include wireless phone
and broadband. If you're unhappy with your cable provider, Verizon's
FIOS is supposed to be good. If that's not available in your area,
then switch to satellite; I like DirecTV.
Bonus tip: Club soda is good for removing energy-drink stains from
carpets and underwear.

Hi, Fran, good to hear from you. No, you will not hit the big one this
winter, but that's not necessarily a bad thing if the big one is an
oncoming Mack truck on a rain-slick highway.
