We're flying into (and out of) LAX for a 2 week road trip. As
we're going to be doing a lot of driving, I'm looking for rental
place that can offer decent cars.
In addition to the car, I need:
o Unlimited miles.
o Out-of-state driving (Nevada, Arizona).
o Full insurance.
o Second driver allowed.
What is the situation with GPS in rental cars? In my usual rental
market, GPS is standard in all but the cheapest cars. What is the
situation in the US? >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

By high-end do you mean a large car, or something like a Maserati? All the
usual companies will rent you a large car, and if you specify a gps at
booking time you'll get one. If you want an exotic, like a Ferrari or a
Bentley, be prepared to pay a lot.
Most rentals include unlimited miles, and I'm sure you can arrange that even
for an exotic car. There is nothing I've ever heard of that would prevent
traveling between states, only taking a rental out of the country.
If you just mean high-end to be a Lincoln or something like that, then most
comanies will have one, given notice.

Not so fast. OP needs to tell the rental company where he'll be
taking the car, out of state. In Calif it is illegal for the company
to track the car using a GPS. But still, it's safer to inform the
rental company first.

I would recommend you try Fox Rent A Car at www.foxrentacar.com
(surprise!). They meet all your requirements including GPS if you
want it (it's extra) and I have always found them the cheapest
(usually by far). You can read their rules online. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

I think he's asking whether he can have a GPS with him to use, not one
implanted in the car to catch him speeding. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

Large car. I've rented Mercedes S-class for similar trips in Germany.

So it's an extra with a fee?
After my original posting, I've tried a couple of multinational rental companies
and it turns out that booking through my local affiliate is a lot cheaper. For
Avis it was 40% cheaper. Strange. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

Virtually all whille have large cars if you rent in advance

You will always pay for it, either directly or in a higher rental fee
if included. If they've implanted it in the car to catch you
speeding, they will rely on your fine to pay them back. But one chap
said that was illegal in California as it should be everywhere.

That's not unusual. Car rental firms like to rape what they think are
naive foreigners. Watch the CDW charge they're going to try to foist
on you. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

No problem... these people have very high end cars:
http://www.budgetbeverlyhills.com/
But really an S Class will not be hard to come by from many vendors in
Los Angeles.
There is also a high end car rental in Newport Beach.
Enjoy

These are all available with any of the major rental companies.
If you book through their european web sites the quoted rates
will include all necessary insurance.

You can usually request it on line while booking

Any of the major rental car agencies should be able to meet your needs,
no problem. Just check Expedia, or check rental agency web sites such as
hertz.com, national.com, budget.com, etc. If you are looking for an
exotic car, such as a Ferrari, that's a different issue, and all I can
suggest is doing a web search on something like "exotic car rental Los
Angeles" to see what turns up. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

I don't know of any rental agency that offers a GPS for no extra charge.
It might be cheaper for you to buy your own GPS and just bring it with
you. I live in Philadelphia and I just got back from a trip to Florida
two days ago. I rented a car, but I took my own GPS with me and it
served me well and I didn't have to pay a dime extra to the rental car
agency to use it. I also took the power cable charger with me and the
suction cup mounting bracket. It worked out great. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

No, rental companies put GPS tracking devices in cars to catch you
going to places you shouldn't be, such as off road or out of state.
That's different than the GPS used for location by the driver. The
first kind of GPS tracking system is illegal in Calif. but not other
states. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |

The OP is from Denmark IRC and depending on the unit the cost of US
maps can be excessive for a one time trip

Yes, but as I said, I think he is asking about having one for location

the other. >> Stay informed about: High-End car rental in LA |
