I don't think it has been yet (7:50pm Sydney time, 5:50am NY time I
think). I got a phone call at 6:15 this morning from JA saying there
was a hurricane warning over there, the guy calling me was going to
get up on his roof and try and nail things down.
I checked the net as soon as I got to work, saw the devastation of
Grenada. The last forecasts I can see say Ivan should reach there
Friday morning, local time.
These latest reports are also saying Ivan is now a category 5,
catastrophic level as the levels are rated. God!

Jamaica is in the track of Ivan but has NOT been "hit" yet. This is a
SEVERE Cat. 5 Hurricane so watch out Jamaica and Cuba.
Grenada took a SEVERE beating with 90% of the homes devastated.
Bonaire suffered minor problems but was spared severe damage.
Prayers to those in Grenada.

How badly was Barbados hit? We were on a cruise ship waiting out the
storm during Frances Pictures of both the paths of Frances and Ivan
were posted. I met two ladies staring intently at the Ivan track---they
were from Barbados, and worried. >> Stay informed about: Caribbean Hit Again! |

Current track has it over Jamaica about 0100 UTC on Sat. A cat 5
will utterly devastate the shanty towns; this will be one of the
worst disasters in a very long time.
The track also currently takes it across major s.coast Cuban
cities and Havana. I wonder how St.Vincent and esp the Grenadines
have fared. Wow, awful.

isn't it? all I know of SVG is what I read on the net, and
relatively, it seems not nearly as bad off as Grenada is - including a
report that SVG PM Ralph Gonsalves said rescue work should go to
Grenada rather than his country b/c of the worse situation.
My last on-the-ground JA contact was 6 hours ago (1am Friday Sydney,
10am Thursday JA). My friend said he'd taken it for a joke,
literally, until a neighbour told him forecast much worse than Gilbert
and he was going to follow others and try and board up whatever he
could. At that time, he said, everyone around him was just trying to
prepare in whatever way they can - Negril. Said they'd been told it
was expected to hit in the afternoon/evening.
I can only wait with trepidation, like everyone else. and be thankful
I'm not there, sure I'd be more of a hindrance than help.
I'm sure he'll call me later if & when he can, he's got instructions
to call collect or get someone else to if he can't. I'll post news
when I hear it. If things go like Grenada, might not be soon. I'm
still reading that Grenada still cannot communicate with anyone in or
out of the island, + still no water or power.

Barbados was just brushed and is mostly OK. From Sept 8th

From Sept 7th
>About 200 + buildings were damaged mostly with roofs blown off. The cover over the Concorde flew away. Lots of trees are down and have taken power lines with them. Several of the smaller hotels have had partial damage to roofs. There is a lot of debris around in the roadways...Some of the buildings at the port were damaged... One 75 year old woman was found dead in a ditch.
Another report
>Lots of branches and downed wires on the roads. Also drove past the careenage and the surf is indeed up and crashing over the barriers by Fort Willoughby (Coast Guard Headquarters)...was indeed a sight to behold. Then took a drive along Trevor's Way on my way to inspect my friends shop in the port - wow! I am so sorry I didn't have a video camera with me...the surf reminded me of the Soup Bowl in Bathsheba...The shops in the port have suffered extensive damage, with some merchandise being washed out to sea...will obviously be a while before they can open again.
>
>On my way back home, drove up the south coast - and believe it or not, there were people in the ocean at Carlisle Bay - SURFING!!! I really though I had seen it all, but that was the icing on the cake...and people were on the beach gawking at them. Continued up the south coast were I noticed a lot of debris combined with tree branches in the road. But, the National Conservation Commission I believe, was already on the job cleaning up. At KFC, the surf was actually in the parking lot...

I've found so do a search on Grenada or Caribbean news - sites I've
found with a bit of news are BBC, spice islander, spice isle, cedra,
and some other places which escape me right now. Jamaica Observer
hasn't updated for a while. >> Stay informed about: Caribbean Hit Again! |

Not yet:
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/09/09/hurricane.ivan.ap/index.html
It's expected to hit Jamaica Friday morning. From what I have just heard by
phone from Jam (13.00 UTC) is that many shops and places are closing down
and people preparing for the hurricane.
Let's hope it's not that bad.

I had another phone call about 9pm JA time, things were ok in Negril
but Kingston was "having trouble". Keeping track on the net, BBC &
stormcarib stated by 2pm local time it should be in full force over
Jamaica.
I'd been asked to ring when I got home, so I did. About 3:15am JA
time. My friend was very quiet, most unusual for him. Said everyone
had done what they could and now just had to "wait to meet this
storm".
When I checked this storm carib site it gave indication the
storms/winds should reach Kingston (if I worked the times out right,
many conversions to do) local time about 7:15am, MB about 1:47pm. The
eye should reach about 13.5 hours after that. It's going to be a long
wait it seems. Something else I read said that the storms & winds in
this awful thing spread out more than 500 kilometres from the eye.
That is massive, as it seems to be on a satellite image I found
somewhere.
