Hi all

Myself and my Fiancee are planning to go to a greek island for our
honeymoon in August. We are looking for somewhere nice and relaxing
but with enough places to eat and drink to keep us occupied for 10
days or so. At the moment out preferred choice is Kos but wondered if
anyone on here could either give us a better alternative or suggest
somewhere on Kos that would match our requirements

Thanks for any info recieved

Bri

Hi, August of course is the busiest month of the year in Greece,
and most of Europe. As Kos is one of the more tourist islands I
would imagine it will be quite busy and bustling and not that
relaxing, but I may be wrong as I have never been there.

Where would I suggest. Well what about Chios. Lovely working
island, not very touristy at all but with plenty of places to eat
and drink, a lovely town and harbour and lots of beaches. Also
lots of nice villages to visit, very interesting history and the
village of Mesta which is in the old style where all the rooves
meet each other to provide a sort of underground town complete
with goats, tavernas etc., to keep the invaders out.

We went over there for five days whilst living in Halkidiki
(which is also lovely, but in august perhaps not so good a choice
as all the Greeks come from Thessaloniki and it gets very very
busy). Five days in Chios, we made the museum to track my Greek
family. Drove north, south and west and saw loads of villages,
beaches, typical Greek shops and also the gorgeous main town. We
never made the east as we ran out of time. Loads of places to
eat. Could definitely take you ten days to explore, relax and eat
your way through your honeymoon.

We definitely would go again.

Skopelos is nice too, however that is more onthe tourist map too
so may be that bit busier.

Chios I believe you can fly to from Athens, or catch a ferry.

Another nice working island, Leros. You fly to Rhodes and it is
a four hour boat ride (from memory). Worth it though.

Just a couple of ideas. Have a great honeymoon.

On honeymoon all you need to think about are majestic ceilings.

It rather depends on what you are looking for. If you want to book a typical
package holiday with standard tourist hotel, swimming pool and all the rest
of it, then Kos will probably suit you very well. August can be extremely
hot, but the town is quite nice and shady, and the traffic is controlled
better than in most Greek towns. There are lots of bars and tavernas but it's
all rather touristy and prices for everything are sky-high.

If you want a more Greek experience it's better to go independently - book a
flight to Athens and then choose your island. It's really quite easy, and
you will have a choice of around 70 delightful islands. If you want to try
your hand at this, then feel free to ask on this newsgroup.

August is not a good month for travel to Greece.

Athens is good in August Smile Everyone has left it. But not the place
for a honeymoon.

It's true August is the busiest and hottest month for the Greek
islands. Santorini is THE honeymoon island with plenty of websites
offering an all-in honeymoon package but, as they tend to be on the
most popular islands and at the busiest time of the year, they will
cost a small fortune. I'd take a look at a less popular island like
say Thassos. Easy to get to (fly to Kavala on the mainland then a
short ferry trip), small enough to get to any resort for the day,
plenty of Greek atmosphere, wonderful old port stacked high with
tavernas and cafes, good beaches, pine forests and the best honey in
Greece. Check out this site if you want to find out more

It's a looong time since my honeymoon, but I would agree with thedoc's
suggestion of a "relatively" quiet island. The ferry port at Keramoti is a
10minute taxi ride from the airport (no buses), then a 40minute ferry
crossing to Limenas (Thassos town). From there there is a fairly good bus
service to most places on the island, if you want to get out of the main
town.
