Pritesh,
Inn Crowd comes with high recommendations since they opened in Oct
'02. Since then others have joined in the "modern" hostel concept. I
think you have posted on Thorntree with the same message and I'll
summarise what was said there.
Basically, there are 3 hostels of similar genre;
http://www.the-inncrowd.com
http://www.chillinn.com
http://www.betelbox.com
hostels of the more squeeze-em-in genre include;
http://www.mackenziehostel.com
theres a decent list on bootsnall that you may wish to check out.
http://www.bootsnall.com/hostels/asia/sing/
this list seem to exclude Betel Box for some reason, perhaps because
they just opened.
anyways, depending on your budget and what you wish to do in
Singapore, choosing a hostel is relatively simple. Do what I do, write
to the operators, ask about things to do and what to recommend. The
one that fits your style, is that one you should consider staying.
another thing to consider is to write to guests of these operators
through the guestbooks in the hostel website.
price-wise, under $20 per bunk per night seems to be the norm for the
"modern" genre hostels. the ymca/ ywca is not really a hostel in
singapore and their price is hotel standard.
depending on what you like doing, you can more or less cover singapore
in less than 4 days. personally, i prefer hostels over hotels as you
can meet other travellers.
if you need more info, you can post to the group or just private
message me.
