Flying in to San Jose at 10:20 pm. Looking for a decent hotel near airport
or not far timewise. Is SJ a place to sightsee for a day or so?

Hi Bill:

I think this is too late but it may help others.

There are a number of San Jose Costa Rica airport hotels available:

Hotel El Rodeo (15 minutes from the airport) http://elrodeohotel.com
Hotel Parque del Lago (20 minutes from the airport) http://parquedellago.com
Hotel Centro Colon (20 minutes from the airport) http://hotelcentrocolon.com
Hampton Inn and the Courtyard are literally across the street

For more upscale places check these boutique hotels out here:
Small Distinctive Hotels of Costa Rica at http://distinctivehotels.com

You will also find a directory in the lobby when you check out of
customs (in the baggage area) with more options. Use the airport taxis
(Taxis Unidos) - these are found right after you walk out of the
baggage customs area in a little window on your left. This is a solid
reputable company with standardized fares. Some hotels offer free
shuttles so check that first.

Note: these driving times are at night - it will take a LOT longer
during the day with normal traffic.
