I guess everything is relative because Varadero may be considered "too
commercial" compared to other resort areas in Cuba, but it's definitely
*not* commerical when compared to something like Cancun. In Varadero, there
is at least some space between resorts. Just a few words of caution
regarding resorts in Varadero and perhaps Cuba in general. First, what they
consider a 4-start hotel is probably a 3-star hotel in most other places.
Secondly, you definitely have to choose the "all-inclusive" option because
you will find it extremely difficult to find any decent restaurants in the
area, unless you want to drive to Havana, which to me shows how
non-commericial it is. If you wanted something more isolated, try the south
or southeastern part of the island; a place like Santiago de Cuba where
there's probably nothing to do except lay on the beach and perhaps visit a
historical site or two. Depending on your inclination, though, you may get
bored in a place like Santiago de Cuba.
