There are something like 20 Ibis hotels in Paris. Which ones are
the most convenient from a transit point of view, in other words,
which ones are located next to a metro stop? Feel free to add
comments on the neighborhood from a first-time-to-Paris-tourist
aspect.

I only know one location well enough to comment, that is the Bercy
(12th) area. The hotel is about a block and a half from the metro (line
14 the fast, newer one) It is a different experience a neighborhood
around it but a new trendy area (converted warehouses) next to the metro
stop. I like Bercy but it is not as "Parisian" as say Latin Quarter or
Monmarte. >> Stay informed about: Ibis hotels in Paris |

We just talked about Ibis hotels in Paris on this group a few weeks
ago. Check google for an archive.
I can recommend the Ibis Gare de l'Est convienient to both that
station and Gare du Nord. Good location and friendly staff that went
out of their way to help me when I got sick during my stay.

Well, just looking at the map on the Ibis website, it seems that there are
about a dozen that are in the central area of Paris. Picking with a pin I
would choose one of the ones near Opera as being closest to touristy things.
For an alternative, the one at Jemmapes is near the Canal St Martin, which
may be a factor if you're a fan of Amelie or Hotel du Nord.
Nowhere in Paris is very far from the Metro.

Ibis is a mass-market motel type chain. You might want to try a small local
hotel. Go to Jack's website, <a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.jack-travel.com," target="_blank">www.jack-travel.com,</a> for a good list of hotels
in all areas of Paris.

I recently booked the Ibis Eiffel Cambronne which is near to Metro 6 which
goes to Etoile etc. This seemed to be suitable for my particular transport
requirements..

It used to be part of the Arcade chain which Ibis took over. It's rooms are
small even by European standards. I felt that Arcade was slightly downmarket
from Ibis. Location is OK, near an elevated Metro stop, IIRC. >> Stay informed about: Ibis hotels in Paris |

The one at Montparnasse is near everything,
Metro, Mainline station to the West, plenty
of restaurants etc., on the Boulevard. >> Stay informed about: Ibis hotels in Paris |

There is an Ibis hotel right beside the Mercure Montmarte, about a
block form the Place Clichy Metro stop. It is a block from the
Cemetere Monmartre and a short walk from Montmartre itself, and just
a few blocks from Pigaille, an area that is a little sleazy bit quite
popular with tourists. >> Stay informed about: Ibis hotels in Paris |

I've stayed there twice (1998 and 2000). Rooms were ok for a hotel-chain of
it's type. Breakfast was included in my price (check this) and provided a
good variety and quantity. Very near Metro Cambronne. Area authentic. On a
bus route [no 80] that crosses the Champs Elysees). Getting back late at
night needed a taxi (I could not work out where to catch the night buses).
An easy walk to Eiffel Tower, Not very many restaurants visible in the
area.
