Post subject: Is all of Italy closed on April 25?
Archived from groups: rec>travel>europe (more info?)

Hi, I am arriving in Livorno on April 25 via cruise ship for a 1 day stop so
that those passengers who have not done so can visit Florence and Sienna and
all the other Tuscan biggies via the super expensive cruise ship shore
excursions. Since I have visited those places several times myself, I'd
like to do something different and explore Livorno and points south.

But...

I have heard that April 25 is a major Italian holiday and everything is
closed. Including some car rental places and perhaps many museums and or
other interesting places to see. Can any one tell me if this is true and
what we can expect to find open on this holiday?

Our plan is (was) to rent a car and drive south along the coast to see the
various villages and Etruscan sites. Has anyone experienced this holiday in
Italy before?

I have also emailed the Livorno tourist agency to get their input.

Thanks for any info.

Gord Pope

April 25 is Liberation Day, celebrating the end of WWII. It's also
usually one of the spring holiday "bridges" when many people take short
vacations. This year, with Easter being "low" in March when weather is
not yet so good, and with April 25 on a Friday, it's likely to be the
first real "bridge".

It's not really one of those days where everything is closed, like
Christmas and May 1st. More alike a normal Sunday. Museum opening may
vary according to places, but I expect in tourist area most sights and
shops be open, since tourists will be coming.

There might be official commemorations with demonstrations (it depends
which government we will have at the time Smile, the bald dwarf has never
been keen on April 25, but his opponents are). In a "red" region like
Tuscany (and particularly Livorno), I expect they will be taking place
very quietly and be crowded.

Thanks for the answer. So far I have found no car rental places open. I
presume that trains will run as normal, maybe with a Sunday schedule(?) so
maybe that's how we'll travel.

Thanks again.

Is that a euphemism for "off their tits" in Finland?

for sure there will be a lot of celebrations with flowers to Partisans'
monuments and so on.
shops will be closed for sure.
trains and punlic services will be running on a Sunday schedule
I do not think Museums will be closed though.
but that depends on the town
there are Museums that belong to the State.. to the regions.. to the
Porvicnes.. to the towns. to the Religiuos authrities-- and so on

No idea in general, nor at Livorno harbour in particular (in an airport
I'd expect them to be open)

Possibly Sunday timetable with variations (more trains). You can use the
following sites :

1) http://home.arcor.de/e.lauterbach/auskunft/fplanx-en.html
2) http://www.trenitalia.com/it/index.html
3) http://www.trenitalia.it/
4) http://www.viaggiatreno.it/viaggiatreno/

(1) is an unofficial but quicker interface to the German timetable
service, which covers all Europe, is fast and accurate, is in English so
you can read the notes about days of operation of a train. No info on
italian fares though.

(2) for unexplained reason the "com" site has a more easily found
interface to the timetable than (3). You have to use this if you want
fare information. Otherwise just use (1)

(3) this looks more the holding institutional site, not advisable

(4) this is also run by Trenitalia and is quite nice, but is more for
real time train traffic info than seasonal timetables

For 2) substitute http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html and you'll
get the English language version. This will allow you to use the
English names of Italian cities instead of the Italian names, which
may be unfamiliar to an English speaker.

Yes sure, I didn't notice the "it" in the URL I cutandpasted, anyhow
there are language flags (sorry, for English it's the Union Jack Smile) to
click upon and change the language. What's your opinion on the quality
of English on trenitalia's site ?

> English names of Italian cities instead of the Italian names, which
> may be unfamiliar to an English speaker.

But he'd better get familiar since only the Italian names are printed on
tickets and on station signs. The German site automatically recognizes
place names in a variety of languages and automatically redirects to the
national one. I do not know if trenitalia is so smart.

Anyhow there aren't that many cities which have a non-italian name, and
very few in the area where the OP is likely to travel (I guess only
Florence and Leghorn, which is one of the funniest adaptations I've
seen).

Humour note one : a funny exercise is the literal translation of a place
name "components" into another language. Compare "La Spezia" or
"Liverpool".

Humour note two : I was once on a train from Milan to Nice (which we
call Nizza). While stopping in Savona a young guy was called on the
phone, and they asked him where the train was going. He looked out of
the window, the board had the french destination "Nice Ville" but he
(speaking in italian) read "Nice" as English "nice" Smile

A nice ville, what has this ville to be so nice ?
Like "a fine tunnel, what has this tunnel to be so fine ?" (said by
a Japanese in Genoa, looking at the notice "A fine tunnel / spegnere le
luci" (at the end of the tunnel / turn off the lights) Smile

It's not bad, but they don't have an English version for all the
pages.

The last time I went to the .it site, I didn't see a link for the
English version.

Just checked. Presently there is the word "english" near the top right
corner. On "viaggiatreno" instead there are flags (the Union Jack and
the German one).

The funniest thing is that "viaggiatreno" shows some phantom trains (I
tried yesterday clicking on Livorno and it showed a train from Piombino
to Lecco Maggianico marked "green - on time" with a delay of 90 min ...
today it gives three strange trains ... Piombino-Lecco, Scarlino-Rho and
Rosignano-Savona Parco Doria ... funny stations, funny routes, funny
codes ... I suspect they are freight trains).
