I am contemplating taking my child and 80 year young Mom to JA. We are
seasoned travelers enjoying boutique style hotels. We love to explore and
immerse ourselves in the island culture. I have lived in the islands and
truly want to see the sites and sounds of JA.

I do NOT want all inclusive

I do not want to drive more than an hour from MBJ Airport

I prefer smaller vs. HUGE mega resort

SUPER BEACH is a must for Mom

What would you please recommend?

Coyaba Beach Resort has 50 rooms and is owner-operated.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.coyabajamaica.com/navigate.html" target="_blank">http://www.coyabajamaica.com/navigate.html</a>

Another is Round HIll Hotel & Villas:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.roundhilljamaica.com/home.htm" target="_blank">http://www.roundhilljamaica.com/home.htm</a>

Both are quite small and seem to meet your criteria, but I haven't stayed
at either.

At the risk of being blasted & lombasted, I must ask, are you sure you
want to get involved in the local culture?? I know others have loved
the experience.... myself, found the "experience" to be a bad dream.
Perhaps I went about it the wrong way, in the wrong place, wrong time.
I certainly never got a "warm fuzzy feeling." from anyone in Jamaica.
And in fact, felt I was being intimidated on many occasions.
Other islands,not a problem. Jamaica? all-inclusives,
thank you. A shame, because its one of the few islands which truly
has it's own culture.

I suggest the Kuyaba hotel in Negril, it meets all of your above criteria.

Hi S& B,
Then I ask why go somewhere if you only feel safe in an ai enclave? I lived
in the West Indies and often in very poor areas and never felt threatened. I
exercise caution. I have hopes that I will experience a positive side to JA.
As in anywhere, I am sure I will encounter a jerk or scam artist..but isn't
that so everywhere?

Does anyone have first hand experience at any nice places as I had asked?
Thanks so much.

Ann

Do u think my beach loving bug hating 80 year young Mom will find it nice?
Not too rustic? To me, it looks like heaven.

How much to cab it to Negril? How far please from MBJ?

Didnt find bugs to be a problem, I was there twice, once in April and once at
New Years. The Kuyaba has both rustic and modern rooms, I recommend the deluxe
rooms or the honeymoon suite which is only $10 more a night and has a huge deck.
There are deluxe rooms at ground level and one flight upstairs. The cabins are
rustic and part of the older resort which was called the Sea Gem. The bar and
eating area is fantastic, built all out of wood and stone and projects right out
to the edge of the beach. Spending the mornings on that deck eating breakfast
was one of the highlites of our trip...an unlimited refills of blue mtn. coffee.
The food at the Kuyaba gets high marks by everyone...dinner costs between $8 and
$16.

The Kuyaba is owned by Jamaicans, well run, and is the perfect balance between
Jamaican atmosphere/culture and comfort.

We paid $70 for a JUTA van for three of us to Negril from the airport. There is
also a JUTA bus that charges $20 per person but makes several stops. Just ask
for a JUTA driver at the airport or hotel. JUTA is an organization of taxi
drivers for use by tourists. It took a little over an hour on the brand new
road. Negril is a small town, there you can take local route taxis to get back
and forth along the beach and to the cliff areas. The hazard in driving in
Jamaica is on the open road where high speeds and dangerous passing is
commonplace.

For more info on Negril, go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://negril.com/config.pl," target="_blank">http://negril.com/config.pl,</a> although keep in
mind this is a commercial message board and negative comments and opinions maybe
filtered out.

Post subject: Best places in Negril ... [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Three best non-inclusive resorts in Negril.
All side by side in the middle of Negril's 7 mile beach.
About 58 miles from Sangster airport (MBJ) - slightly over a one hour
drive - new road is very smooth.
A cab should be $15-$20 per person one-way. Agree on price before getting in
any cab in Jamaica.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.cocolapalm.com" target="_blank">http://www.cocolapalm.com</a> been here three times and love it.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.charela.com" target="_blank">http://www.charela.com</a> Best food
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.idleawhile.com" target="_blank">http://www.idleawhile.com</a> Non AI owned by Couples AI chain.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.negril.com" target="_blank">http://www.negril.com</a> for info on the area.

Hope this helps.

My wife and I love this place and have returned year after year to the same
apt. The location is fantastic and within walking distance from Alfreds to
the AI restorts. Sometimes we decide to stay in and cook with full
kitchen/washer-dryer/AC/Cable in bedroom and livingroom. Other times we
enjoy fine food at Gambinos in hotel. We shop for food at Sunshine village
and stock the fridge with steak or anything else we like. We have regular
taxi drive called "Bones" who greets us at Sangster each time. We fly or
ride to Negril with or without stopping on the way. The people give a
discount for returning and are very helpfull in finding a driver to fit your
style or needs. We have taken other rides to find they can be rather costly
so we stick with 'Bones'. We have tried so many other places from Port A to
Orchi to Mo Bay many times and can give accounts and photos and names of 20
years+ of wonderful trouble free vacation in Jamaica
