San Francisco had them, or did when I left six years ago. There's
at least one in Helsinki between the Market Square and the Market
Hall. In London there was one on Portobello Road, and welcome it
was while cruising the Portobello Market. But I doubt if they
were everywhere. They're furnished by JC Decaux, a French firm.
In San Francisco they offered to install and maintain the toilets
in exchange for the right to run the adverising in bus stop
kiosks and the like. There's been some controversy about them and
I don't know where they stand now.

She probably saw the "Gherkin", 30 St Mary Axe:

>Why did the travel channel show beautiful Victorian places, but all

That's impossible to answer without knowing what the Travel
Channel showed. Greater London is a very big place and she may
not have been in the right neighborhoods.
In San Francisco a row of Victorian homes called the Painted
Ladies (on Alamo Square) manages to get a lot of publicity but,
in fact, they are the only dolled up Victorians in that
neighborhood.
http://www.zurdogo.com/attractions/paintladies.html
There are other dolled up houses around, though. Many in the
vicinity of Haight-Ashbury.

I seriously doubt it.

They weren't too reliable IIRC. People would pry the door open, and
jam it, so anyone could use it, and thus it wouldn't get cleaned.

What did she expect? HD tvs in every corner?

Possibly because in films such as Match Point, Four Weddings etc. they
show the toffee nosed side of England which is nothing like the
regular life there.

Hi Greg,
Your friend is absolutely right London is not fancy at all,in
fact it is the arsehole of Europe, the self cleaning toilets are a miserable
failure because people "choose" to urinate & defecate in the street it is
also the most expensive Capital in Europe & the most violent there are so
many stabbings & shootings on London's streets these days that it hardly
gets mentioned any more in the news.If you are unfortunate enough to be on
the vomit strewn streets of London after 11pm you run the serious risk of
being attacked by gangs of marauding drunks or even murdered ,London is
governed by a drunken corrupt mayor, who along with a group of self appointed
highly paid gangsters cream off millions of pounds in free holidays expenses
& wages. The giant phallus that your friend saw is a building in the
financial sector & is known as the Gherkin, please pass the word round & tell
your friends the truth about London & tell them to boycott the 2012 Olympic
Games. >> Stay informed about: Questions about London |

Moral: Don't believe everything the media tell you. They would only be
installed where there were no alternative facilities within a reasonable
distance and the Victorians built a lot of public lavatories, often
underground.

Sounds like the Gherkin
> Why did the travel channel show beautiful Victorian places, but all

She didn't have a locations manager selecting what she saw.
> She said she went all over London.
Impressive, given that it covers more than 400 square miles and I only saw a
part of it in the 20 years I lived there.

There is one in Russel Square. It almost gave me a heart attack when
I was walking by it and it started cleaning.

Probably this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_St_Mary_Axe

Because only the ones that are actual tourist sights are prettified,
and a lot of the other buildings are not.

What was she expecting? It's not Disneyworld, it's a city where
millions of people live, for better or worse. >> Stay informed about: Questions about London |

The Gherkin, its glass, not painted.

i would say most victorian houses in london are reasonably OK, but
victorian isnt a period (yet) where they are treated liked
preservation projects, they are just houses.
>She said she went all over London.
I doubt it.

its not all fancy.

It sounds very much as though your friend didn't enjoy the experience in
London. There are plenty of very impressive Victorian buildings in
London- many of them are major tourist attractions, though often
additions were made into the 20th century- e.g. Buckingham Palace.

It still looks black when seen from a distance.
