Hi,
In September, my friends and I, we are going on a road trip. The last
part we are planning on spending in California. On the 18th of
September we will leave Las Vegas.
We need to leave from SF by 26th. I was thinking about spending 1 day
in Palm Springs and see desserts on the way there; 3 days in LA (
don't know what to do there yet: Universal Studios, walk of fame etc).
And we still have 2 day till 24th when I would like to reach SF. I
read that H-way 1 is very pretty. So that would be our h-way to SF. We
need to spend 2 night along there. Has anyone have any suggestions
which towns are the best to stop by? Since the first part of this
vacation will be rather intense, the few days along h-way 1 we'd like
to be more "lazy" and relaxing.
Thanks for all advices!
Sonia

Palm Springs isn't very exciting as desert cities go, especially when
compared to Vegas . I would drive straight through to LA. unless you have
a specific area of interest or destination in Palm Springs.

DO THE RESEARCH!!!! L.A is not geared towards the casual tourist and if you
stick to the obvious tourist traps like Universal Studios you will likely be
disappointed. That said, there is a wealth of activities here to suit any
interest. But you must do you research first! Start here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.laokay.com/" target="_blank">http://www.laokay.com/</a> and here <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/2v6ea." target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/2v6ea.</a> Consider getting
free tickets to a TV taping while in town.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.tvtickets.com/default.htm" target="_blank">http://www.tvtickets.com/default.htm</a> If you're interested in the history of
Hollywood filmmaking, take the Warner Bros' VIP tour

You can't take Highway 1 all the way from LA to San Francisco. The most
scenic portion is roughly from Morro Bay to the Monterey Peninsula. You
should consider Highway 101 for the remainder of the journey. Rand McNally
makes a good road atlas.

Try the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.madonnainn.com/," target="_blank">http://www.madonnainn.com/,</a> Hearst
Castle in San Simeon <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.hearstcastle.com/." target="_blank">http://www.hearstcastle.com/.</a> It might be a little
early, but you can see if the monarch butterflies have migrated to the

I'd recommend staying at San Simeon (Home of Hearst Castle) on the coast
which will put you about halfway to San Francisco. KM

I will take that under consideration.
So do you suggest spending more days in LA or is it better to explore
California (between LA and SF) more?

Yes, I meant 101 and then highway 1. Rand McNally is the atlas I look
at now.

This place is bit too expensive for our budget. We're gonna spend so
much money on this trip anyway...so we try to stay in more economy
kind of hotels.
Thank you whole lot for all the info!!!
I still need to decide where would be the best places to stop on the
way to SF.

You may want to take the aerial tram way up the mountain in Palm springs for
a panoramic view. Also the desert museum is a fine museum.

Depends on your interests. LA is a huge city. Between LA and SF (along the
coast) has a lot of beach and scenic drives. Also small coastal cities.

It's only about a six hour drive. One place definitely worth stopping is
Hearst Castle. There's a nice little town called Cambria about 10 miles
south of San Simeon. There are some nice bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants
and antique shops there.
I don't know where else to suggest -- when I do the drive, I just want to
get where I'm going as soon as I can.
Incidently, there are far better things to see in and around LA than
Universal Studios, which is nothing more than a theme park, and has little
to nothing to do with film making.

That's hard to say because I don't know your interests. L.A. is an exciting
city for young adults, night owls, cinephiles, etc. But if the glamour of
Hollywood doesn't appeal to you, or if you're more interested in scenery,
rolling hills, peace and quiet, then I would move up the coast.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: From Los Angeles to San Francisco |

You might also want to consider stopping in Santa Barbara - beautiful
mission (yes, we have some history in California!), wineries in the
Santa Inez Valley, nice beach town, fun to walk State Street - great
place to hang out if nice weather.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: From Los Angeles to San Francisco |

Well, there's Santa Barbara, Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. Why
don't you look these up, see what you like. I especially like to visit the
California missions.

Close enough.
You are often asked for a "donation" that, if it's not given, results
in being sent to the Hell of the Roman Catholics. Rumor has it that
Mammon has been hired to watch over these things as the Roman
Catholics' god is rather pist at them for allowing the long-known
behaviour of priests with altar boys to become common knowledge.

This page will give you good starter information on all of them:
http://www.ca-missions.org/contact.html
It includes links to more information about each mission. I
believe the specific mission that prompted your question was
Santa Barbara; here's their website:

It's only about a six hour drive if one were to take highway 5, a dull
speedway through the central valley, where you see nothing but
farmland and fields. If you take 101, where you can stop in Santa
Barbara and San Luis Obispo, it takes about 7 hours. If you take
1, which is the route that mostly hugs the coast, it takes about 10
hours. Communities you might want to stop in include Santa Barbara,
Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, Cambria, Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey,
Santa Cruz. Each has its own charms, depending on what you want
to see.

I just did the trip on 101 (I agree -- 5 is too boring) on July 4th weekend.
