I have some distinctive luggage, my Dakine roller is a nice blue plaid,
so it's easy to spot. But, I do make my own luggage tags. I have a
laminating machine (from a club I belong to - we make membership cards),
and bought a luggage tag kit at Staples. I use MS Word to make any kind
of "business card" and backing and just laminate them. It's up to me
how fun I want to go, pick a bright color paper, big lettering, photos, etc.
As for locking the bags, I don't trust those TSA folks when it comes to
"TSA-approved" locks. I've heard too many stories of those locks being
cut off, too. I do two different things to keep the luggage a bit safe
from the casual thief. First, I have lots of those mini-caribiners with
the screw that you can get at sporting goods stores or Home Depot. I
use them to secure the zipper pulls on my bag. If the TSA wants in ,
they just unscrew the thing. The other thing is to buy some of the
colorful key rings - the ones with the colored webbing or rope attached
(usually seen with the sunglass straps). They have the big split rings
on them. I can thread it on the zipper pulls, too. And, it makes the
bag stand out a little on the carousel. I've been using a combination
of these 2 "locks" for years and have never had an issue.
