We are going on a cruise in May. When we fly into Los Angeles, does
our luggage go directly to RCCL buses' or do we have to retreive our
luggage from baggage claim, and then take them to the RCCL buses that
take us to the ship?

After the cruise, does RCCL take our luggage directly to the RCCL
buses that take us to the airport; or do we have to find and retrieve
our luggage from a storage area and take them ourselves to the buses?

Thanks.

We were on The Jewel OTSŪ and had to take our checked bags to the bus
from FLL. From there you will not see them until that night.

Going home set your checked bags outside your door before 11pm the nigh
before you leave. You will go to the area where your bags will be set
and you will take them to the bus (going to the airport). When you get
to the airport you get your bags use curb side check-in or take them to
ticket area and check them.

We just came off the Adventure of the Seas and used their valet
service (for $20 a head) for the homeward trip. In that case, you picked
up your bags in the bullpen, cleared customs and then gave the bags to
the airline rep who checked them through.
Anybody hear anything about this service? On our flight back from
San Juan, there were about 15 people who did not get at least one bag.
Don't know how many were off the Adventure and how many were messed up by
American Airlines itself.

iuki,

I think your question has pretty much been answered, but to help clarify
things a bit, baggage handling is only as good as security requirements.
From Los Angeles, you will need to pick-up your luggage yourself at baggage
claim and bring them to the RCCL buses. There may be assistance from
porters, but you need to identify and claim your own luggage.

Likewise, after your cruise, your will need to pick-up your luggage yourself
in the storage claims area, go through customs, then head for the busses. As
I said, porters may be of assistance, but neither them or the cruise lines
can bypass this requirement for you. Even before tightened security, this
was how it is done.

Happy sailing...

Thanks to all. I had hoped that the luggage process had changed.

We got spoiled with the Magical Express service that Disney makes
available at Walt Disney World. They send us luggage tags, and as the
luggage is unloaded from the plane at the Orlando Airport, the luggage
is automatically taken to the Magical Express bus where we and the
luggage are taken to the hotel.

When we check out, the hotel gives us our boarding pass, and then the
ME bus takes us to the airport and we just check-in our luggage at the
curb.

Thanks again.

We used the valet service in FLL after a Celebrity Constellation
cruise. We had to get our bags out of the bullpen and turn them over
to a valet attendant at the curb. The next time we saw our bags was
at the luggage claim at our destination. All we actually saved was
missing the hassle of checking them in at the airport.

Kurt,

What is sad is that this used to be standard procedure and no $20 fee.
My first 2 RCCL cruises, pre-9/11 of course, had airline trucks parked
on the pier. You essentially checked in at a kisok and put your
luggage on the truck and off to the airport you go without lugging the
luggage.

I just used Luggage Valet in San Juan on Monday (from Galaxy). I
used it because my flight was not until 6:50pm (thanks,
Celebrity air department, although it was non-stop and better
than the original 3+ hour layover in the middle of a SJU -> DTW
-> EWR routing they tried to stick us with) and I did not want
to have to deal with the luggage when we rented a car to tour
for the day. I had been told we would not be able to check
luggage in until 4 hours before the flight. When we got to the
terminal, I was told it was 6 hours, but the automated system
took one additional piece at 10am, so clearly they were
accepting it even earlier than that. In my case I spent $40 for
2 people and the only thing I saved was not having to wait an
extra 10-15 minutes for the luggage truck to arrive (and I guess
the check-in line would have been longer then). Also if your
luggage is (or may be) overweight, they do not weigh it using
Luggage Valet (at least they did not at AA in SJU).

Fortunately all of my luggage arrived when we got to Newark (3
hours late, another story).

The reason you need to retrieve your luggage for most cruises is
because you need to have the luggage when you go through
Customs. For NCLA in Hawaii last summer they just took it from
the hall at night and you did not need to retrieve it in the
terminal (I was told they did not weigh it then, either).

Hi Bill,

The explanation for this is that with NCLA in Hawaii you never left
the US so you do not have to clear customs with your luggage.
