I just used Luggage Valet in San Juan on Monday (from Galaxy). I
used it because my flight was not until 6:50pm (thanks,
Celebrity air department, although it was non-stop and better
than the original 3+ hour layover in the middle of a SJU -> DTW
-> EWR routing they tried to stick us with) and I did not want
to have to deal with the luggage when we rented a car to tour
for the day. I had been told we would not be able to check
luggage in until 4 hours before the flight. When we got to the
terminal, I was told it was 6 hours, but the automated system
took one additional piece at 10am, so clearly they were
accepting it even earlier than that. In my case I spent $40 for
2 people and the only thing I saved was not having to wait an
extra 10-15 minutes for the luggage truck to arrive (and I guess
the check-in line would have been longer then). Also if your
luggage is (or may be) overweight, they do not weigh it using
Luggage Valet (at least they did not at AA in SJU).
Fortunately all of my luggage arrived when we got to Newark (3
hours late, another story).
The reason you need to retrieve your luggage for most cruises is
because you need to have the luggage when you go through
Customs. For NCLA in Hawaii last summer they just took it from
the hall at night and you did not need to retrieve it in the
terminal (I was told they did not weigh it then, either).
