Archived from groups: rec>travel>europe (more info?)

We're in Rome this weekend and I've picked up somewhere on the web that the
Pope says Mass in St. Peters's on the last Sunday of each month.

Does anyone know about this, which Mass, does it be very crowded so need to
get there early, etc?

Thx

According to the Vatican calendar
http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturgy/calendar/ns_lit_doc_200701...calenda
on Sunday 27th May (Pentecost), the Pope is celebrating Mass at Cittą di
Castello in Umbria for a Beatification (so he isn't in Rome). On the
following Sunday 3rd June, Holy Trinity, he is celebrating outdoor Mass at
St Peter's Square at 10 am for a Canonisation. You'll need a ticket for
this, or just turn up very early (around dawn?) to stand outside the
barriers. You'll see the Pope on his Popemobile before and after Mass, and
the service will be shown on giant screens.
There is no rule that the Pope celebrates a public Mass on last Sunday - all
his public celebrations are announced in the Vatican calendar. But on the
last Sunday of the month, the Vatican Museums have free entry - thus even
more crowded (saving 13?).

Thanks, Alec, I didn't know about that link.

Will they be badly crowded that day? We only arrive into Rome at lunchtime
Saturday and leave Tuesday morning - far too short for a first visit but
this trip was a surprise gift from our kids.

We were thinking of going to Mass in St. Peter's on Sunday morning and
spending most of the day leisurely wandering around the Vatican - the other
altenative is to "do old Rome" on Sunday and take one of the organised tours
to the Vatican on Monday. Any recommendation either way ?
