Snip, Snip

Hana is indeed a lovely place and is probably (other than perhaps
Molokai) as close as one can get to "old Hawaii". But, Hana is not
for everyone and anyone contemplating a visit to Hana should look past
the hype and decide if Hana is really the place for them. For many of
us, it's a great place to spend a day or two as part of a vacation on
Maui.

Hana has a number of rental options offering a variety of facilities.
There is only one real hotel and it is pricey and requires (or used
to) long pants and shoes in the dining room. The drive to Hana can be
a delight or a nightmare, depending on your point of view. There are
hundreds of curves in a 34 mile stretch and speeds of above 25 mph are
practically impossible. Most of the Hana Hiway is about 1 1/2 lanes
with most of the bridges (and there are a lot of them) being one
(narrow)lane. Just about all of these bridges are located on a nearly
hairpin curve. Be very careful of tour busses. The roads around Hana
are also about 1 1/2 lane wide with no shoulders. The locals drive as
though they were superhighways.

The biggest problem with Hana is the almost total lack of restaurants.
There's one pretty good restaurant but it's only open for dinner on
about 3 nights of the week. The rest of the time, the options are
fast food (at this same restaurants take-out window)and a couple of
others depending on the time of day, the above mentioned hotel dining
room or buy stuff to eat at Hosagawas General Store (which is a very
neat place. As far as I know the hotel restaurant is open for 3 meals
a day and the other one is open for breakfast and lunch every day.
Whatever option you chose, don't plan on a fashionably late supper.

Hana is very beautiful and can indeed provide a wonderful place to
just relax and enjoy Hawaii at, perhaps, its finest. Prospective
visitors should, however, be aware of the limitations of the area.
