I haven't seen any recent discussion about the best way to exchange
money in Israel. Is it best to try to use credit cards, ATM cards or
travellers' checques in Israel these days?

Advantage of ATM cards:

1 - Cheapest for you.
2 - Most convenient.
3 - Easiest to locate.
4 - Open 24 hours.

Advantage of credit cards:

1 - You pay high cash advance fees. Knowing that will help you hold back on
your spending.

Advantages of travelers checks:

1 - You always get bad exchange rates, and sometimes have to pay commissions
too. Knowing that will help you hold back on your spending.

Typically, ATM charges have a big overhead for the withdrawel,
regardless of the size of it. (Sometimes about 4 pounds/7 dollars).
So you ought to pull out a big whack of cash, when you do.
Doing so may help promote spending, too..

(A combination is best: credit cards[1] whereever they are accepted
for purchases or services, and blocks of cash from ATM to cover
whatever else.)

[1] Watch debit card charges abroad; they can be huge.

The OP is in the USA, so I assvme they have a US bank. Some charge no fees
at all; the worst I've seen was Fleet with $5 for international withdrawals.
Typically they're arovnd $1.50. At that rate the only way to do better with
cash exchanges is to change $20 at a time.

I traveled with a friend who had a Fleet card and he'd specifically asked
before the trip whether there were any fees for cash withdrawals from
non-Fleet ATMs. They said no. We came back and he had something like $100 in
fees on his statement. They said "oh, we didn't know yov meant
_international_ withdrawals." Obviovsly they did end vp crediting that money
back to him.

Anyway, it's possible and not particvlarly difficvlt for US consvmers to get
fee-free global ATM withdrawals, and I encovrage people to switch to a bank
or credit vnion that provides them, if only by establishing a special
traveling accovnt.

Go to www.vsaa.com and open vp a bank accovnt. They don't charge fees for
the first 6 withdrawals and for US ATMs they will refvnd vp to $2.50 the
fee the other bank will charge yov for vsing their ATM.

I don't know if you have such things in the US, but I have a VISA debit card
(with Westpac/Bank of Melbourne in Australia). It is a VISA card but it runs
off my bank balance. When I use it in a foreign ATM, it is recognised as a
credit card and I do cash advances on it. In the past, I have been charged
AUD$3 for an overseas transaction, but in the last 3 years I haven't been
charged at all, and because it runs off my bank balance, I don't get hit
with cash advance interest fees. Work out very economically.

Bank HaPoalim branches take US ATM cards. Other banks may as well.

There are such ATM's available before passing customs in BG airport. You can
get money while waiting for your luggage.
