It struck me in the Singlemalt TR thread that although there are many ways
to vacation in Vegas, there are just as many motives for doing so.
Obviously there are those like Andrew from Alabama who like to see Vegas
as a playground full of bargains where they can get down and dirty with
their friends, eat, drink, gamble, laugh and generally escape their
everyday humdrum. No special activity is the prime reason for their love
of Vegas. They love the shows as much as the gambling, the food as much as
the "free" drinks and the comradeship.
Then there is the group that loves to have a raucous time, doing things
that they would never contemplate at home. This group is usually either
very young and single, or else once a year husband-types who enjoy the
naughty aspects of strip clubs and general debauchery.
Then there is the once a year, or even the once a lifetime group that
comes to see the sights and be awed, but really don't fall head over heels
in love with the place. This probably is the largest group.
Then there is my group, which is very much like the first group, but with
some differences. I like to stay in an upscale room with a jacuzzi, and
feel like a king. I love to come to Vegas to do things I wouldn't or can't
do at home and that release me from my own humdrum. I am as "cheap" as the
first group, and cherish the fact that I can fly there with my wife for
free with Frequent Flyer tickets and a Companion Pass for my wife, stay
from free in a comped room, largely eat for free on points accumulated on
my player's card (I don't bet enough to qualify for full RFB like Doc
Dice), gamble an ungodly number of hours a day, which is my true focus,
hang out in free lounges (for maybe an hour a night) that feature live
entertainment that I would have to pay serious money for here in San
Antonio, stay lightly buzzed most of the day (something unthinkable for a
doctor at home on call 24/7),walk around people-watching, see a few shows,
smoke a few cigars (while ALWAYS at least carrying one), and generally
letting my hair down. But in truth, I can take or leave the shows and the
food. It is the gambling that rocks my boat.
I'm sure there are innumerable other motives and modes of enjoying Vegas.
What are your's?
Tom

We go for three reasons:
1) Work - we stay where ever travel decides, are guests at places like
Prime, Aureole or Pinot and enjoy the view from various high-end suites.
2) Shooting - stay where ever the group has the best rates, eat where ever
we don't have to wait for a table, great fun but not relaxing.
3) Shopping and fun, generally a Monday-Thursday visit. We usually stay at
a Coast hotel, eat at mid priced steak houses and the Silverton "Seasons"
buffet. We shop, visit with (non AVLV) friends, see a show, gamble, have a
few drinks, and just relax. >> Stay informed about: Motives and Modes of Vegas vacationing |

Wow, your reasons and what you do in Las Vegas could have easily had

1. I like being able to get a reservation at Nobu (Hard Rock) the same
day I want to have dinner vice New York where you have to call 2 weeks
in advance for a reservation. I find the meal at Joel Robichons that I
ate last time is well worth repeating.
2. I like to check out the shows. I am tempted to visit las Vegas now
because Roseanne is playing at the Sahara. I would like to get drunk
and insult her and listen to her response.
3. A visit to a brothel in Nye county if my luck at the tables is
going south. .
4. I would like to do a 24 hour gambling marathon. When I see other
gamblers playing blackjack for 24+ hours straight (that certain glazed
look in their eyes, makes me want to go for that experience).

Stay at friends' houses for free and spend most of our "Vegas" time in strip
clubs. Plus drink a lot and do a little gambling here and there. Might
see a show like Love if everyone is in the mood.
Been there done that with all the other modes, from fancy shmancy to down
and dirty downtown.
These days its really all about seeing old friends, the strip clubs, and
people watching.

I like going because for 4-5 nights, it's whatever I want, whenever I
want it. My primary reason for going is gambling & even though there's
gambling just about everywhere nowadays, it still ain't like Las Vegas.
The options are limitless. I prefer to stay downtown primarily for
the proximity of all the casinos & the smaller sizes of the hotels.
However, I still like to make it out to the Strip on occasion. I enjoy
gambling @ the Golden Gate and the California as well as the Bellagio
and LV Hilton.
The whole 24 hours aspect of the town is what I really like. Most
hotels have their coffee shop open 24/7 and the casinos are open 24/7.
The only time I have to look at my watch is to make sure I get a bet
down by post time or kickoff.
I can somewhat relate to Andrew & his fanny pack because I wear a
calculator watch in Las Vegas. My reason for wearing it is to crunch
#'s in the racebook between races. It beats carrying around a
calculator & it's been very useful.

In my early 20's (late 80's)I was able to go to Vegas a couple of times
when driving to CA but being young and newly married couldn't afford to
really enjoy what Vegas had to offer. Wife didn't really enjoy gambling due
to the tight budget and really didn't know what else to do. Since then we
have gotten established in life and able to do more traveling and have
rediscovered Vegas and all the things it has to offer. I have been 4 times
in the last 3 years and have another trip booked for the first week in June
with my wife and her girlfriend.
Your first paragraph covers our primary motive for going to Vegas and the
fact that for the most part it is adult oriented. My wife really is not
comfortable letting her hair down at home so Vegas gives her the chance to
do this. We enjoy our time downtown (GN) due to the fact it is easier to
get to some of the points of interest that we enjoy ( RedRock Canyon and
shopping), plus we we love walking up and down Fremont Street drinking and
people watching. Our gambling $'s also seems to last longer downtown.
Usually after a few days downtown we will move to the strip to enjoy the
shows and some of the finer dining. We don't mind spending a little extra
money on a good meal and for the most point avoid the buffets. We try to get
the best rates we can but usually go for the low-mid range hotels. We really
don't spend that much time in our room anyway so why spend a lot of money on
something that will get little use. I would rather save my money for more
frequent trips. I am more about quantity over quality.
I really hope that this trip will coincide with the Soiree and that I
might get to meet a few others who love LV as much as I do. .

Nothing exciting here. The better half and I enjoy the people watching, and
checking out the different casinos. We're both low maintenance, so any
decent
room near center strip is fine with us. (Flamingo, old BC, etc.) We try to
do a few shows, and mostly play the slots. We haven't been able to find any
great room or airfare bargains this year, so nothing is planned for a trip
so far this year.

Most of the above (which I conveniently snipped).
Bargains are important to me, but I have no problem paying $100 plus
for a meal at Picasso.
I've stayed at the Western and at Bellagio, the V and Augustus Tower.
I guess I'm a fan of many different things the city has to
offer(bargains and gourmet food, historic dumps and world-class
luxury, shopping and a perfectly normal American city away from the
Strip) that I'm hard to categorize. But after having visited 42 US
states, this is the one US destination I like to return to again and
again.
But, sadly, no inclination for little people wrestling in a pool
whatsoever.

I thought about this while doing some driving today, and while I think
that the majority of people who read and participate in AVLV probably
have motives similar to this, I think that we are a very small portion
of the Vegas visitor pool. I think your other categories probably
describe 99.9% of typical Vegas visitors on any given day.
