I went to the Mummers website, and it appears that they have their
parade on New Years Day, but I am thinking that they also have a
parade on Thanksgiving. Does anyone know if they have a parade on
Thanksgiving? I would have to travel around three hundred miles to
Philly for the parade. Would such a trip be worthwhile? I have been to
Philly a number of times.

Thanks

The Thanksgiving Parade is aimed mainly at kids -- very similar to the
Macy's parade in New York -- with floats, balloons and the entry to
Santa Claus. The Mummer's Parade is a New Year's Day tradition,
featuring string bands, "fancy" divisions and "comic" brigades. It's
a totally amateur parade -- all costumes and routines are developed
and performed by everyday people who have formed clubs to march in the
parade. There are no corporate floats, etc., such as the Rose Bowl
Parade.

Sometimes, around the Fourth of July, there is an abbreviated "Mummers
in Summer" parade down the Parkway, although this may now be a thing
of the past. You'd have to check. And, finally, there is the
Mummer's Museum on Washington Avenue in Philly which is actually a
pretty neat little museum.

Philadelphia does have a parade on Thanksgiving that a few of the Mummers
groups may participate in, but it is not a Mummer's Parade (if that makes
sense).

If you are going to travel 300 hundred miles to see Mummers, come see them
on New Years Day (as long as it doesn't rain and the parade is postponed).
